Military Coup in Turkey

Ok, so, the president there sucks but I suppose you can't really be supportive of coups, can you? At least not after democratic elections :dunno:

I just hope they don't kill a lot of people (it does not seem that they are doing that though (at this moment))

There is nothing to be said in favour of a secular dictatorship except when it is compared to a theocratic one. Erdogan is well on the way to creating the latter. I hope the military topples him.

Agreed he was an arsehole, but military dictatorships can be very nasty indeed. And whose to say they won't cosy up to muslim groups for some sort of legitimacy?

Latest news suggest that the coup has failed.

Does that make it a putsch?

Hmm... do news travel faster to Australia?

I don't think anybody knows yet if it has succeeded or not.

The BBC publishes updates as they come to hand. http://www.bbc.com/news/live/world-europe-36811357 Several reports among the ones that hit their desk in the past half hour indicate that the coup is faltering.

CNN was suggesting that it had failed, but it might be too early to be sure...

No one complained about the military coup in Egypt that threw the Muslim brotherhood out of power a couple of years ago.....
A rational skeptic should be able to discuss and debate anything, no matter how much they may personally disagree with that point of view. Discussing a subject is not agreeing with it, but understanding it.

You must be blind and deaf. Plenty of people protested. I most emphatically was not among them, though.

I meant complained in the western world. Islamist terrorists certainly complained in Egypt when the military kicked the Muslim brotherhood out of power and arrested / executed them.

Woke up yesterday morning to the Nice attack, and this morning to the Turkish coup attempt. What's coming tomorrow? :?

Muslims are allergic to democracy. Prefer having the iron fist rule of them. A cultural-religious edifice that only respects power. Wants what it gets.
