What is going on?The worst I've seen – trauma expert lifts lid on 'atrocity' of Australia's detention regimeExclusive: In his 43-year career, Paul Stevenson has worked in the aftermath of the Bali bombings and the Boxing Day tsunami but says nothing he witnessed was as bad as the treatment of asylum seekers on Nauru and Manus
In my entire career of 43 years I have never seen more atrocity than I have seen in the incarcerated situations of Manus Island and Nauru.”
Paul Stevenson has had a life in trauma. The psychologist and traumatologist has spent 40 years helping people make sense of their lives in the aftermath of disaster, of terrorist attacks, bombings and mass murders, of landslides, fires and tsunamis.
He’s written a book about his experiences, Postcards from Ground Zero, and for his efforts in assisting the victims of the Bali bombings, the Australian government pinned an Order of Australia Medal to his chest.
Now, he says, it is the Australian government deliberately inflicting upon people the worst trauma he has ever seen.

These are descendants of common criminals so what do you think is going on?

What will the world be like after its ruler is removed?

Re: The 'atrocity' of Australia's detention regime
Basically, Australia has outsourced the building and management of offshore concentration camps for people, men, women and children, whose crime is to seek asylum. This has been going on for years, and because the three biggest political parties and about half the Australian public support this crime against humanity, there is next to no chance that the current policy on refugees will be changed any time soon. The callousness and inhumanity of it is unbelievable. It is really upsetting and makes me ashamed of my country. I also do what little I can to change the situation, but it's like pushing shit up hill.

I am quite sure plenty of Australians dont agree with this policy but it is a very convenient way to brush a problem under the carpet. What is going to happen to these people? If they are economic migrants they should be returned home as fast as possible.Hermit wrote:Basically, Australia has outsourced the building and management of offshore concentration camps for people, men, women and children, whose crime is to seek asylum. Nothing happens to those people, be they genuine asylum seekers - which almost 90% are - or opportunists. They stay where they are until they decide to accept an offer to be ferried back to their previous stop, or to Thailand, or anywhere else that is not Australian soil. The White Australia Policy, instituted by Australia's first Prime Minister in 1901 and abolished by Gough Whitlam in 1972, has returned with a vengeance, and is as ugly as ever.Scot Dutchy wrote:I am quite sure plenty of Australians dont agree with this policy but it is a very convenient way to brush a problem under the carpet. Now I'm waiting for the usual fuckwits to pipe up with the usual crap about the dangers of letting foreigners into the country. Two of them are already on my ignore list, but there are plenty more to go around. I'm out of this thread.

We can't comment on that for "operational reasons".Scot Dutchy wrote:What is going on?The worst I've seen – trauma expert lifts lid on 'atrocity' of Australia's detention regimeExclusive: In his 43-year career, Paul Stevenson has worked in the aftermath of the Bali bombings and the Boxing Day tsunami but says nothing he witnessed was as bad as the treatment of asylum seekers on Nauru and Manus

Yeah, don't blame you. Fuck the asylum seekers. Let them go find some Asian or Muslim country to leech off of.
A rational skeptic should be able to discuss and debate anything, no matter how much they may personally disagree with that point of view. Discussing a subject is not agreeing with it, but understanding it.

This post manages to be both racist and wilfully clumsy in sentence construction...Tyrannical wrote:Fuck the asylum seekers. Let them go find some Asian or Muslim country to leech off of.

They choose to stay where they are, rather than take a free ticket home.Scot Dutchy wrote: What is going to happen to these people? If they are economic migrants they should be returned home as fast as possible.
Fuck em. It's their choice.
Congratulations to Australia, for an intelligent response to freeloaders.
It seems to have effectively stemmed the trickle, that became a flow, and threatened to become a flood of boat people.
