and free market is a plague because it allows large operators to put the industries of whole countries out of business by undercutting their prices.

a country needs to be reasonably self sustaining in both food and industrial goods, not to mention that this provides jobs

Calling the free market a plague. Free markets built the western standard of living, and private market participants are demonstrably more responsive to the needs of customers than government run operations. Economic freedom causes economies to expand and poverty to fall. Yet, it's a "plague." And, that's a common refrain these days, where people have taken to the notion that socialism is good, profit motive is bad, and free markets are a "plague." It's sort of an outgrowth, I think, of the weird notion that communism is some sort of "ideal" that we can only strive for, but sadly never achieve. It's like we're in Bizarro World.

Speak for yourself.

BTW A free market would imply the free access and movement of labour to employment opportunities.

And no protectionism. 42 is going to have problems reconciling that with his support of Trump's policy to bring back Mercan jobs.

A free market within a nation has never meant "no protectionism." Free market doesn't mean anarchy.

"free market " means "free international market", otherwise, it's as regulated as any.

A free market never meant absolutely free, as in no rules or regulations. All markets must be regulated to function.

Correct. The proper functioning of a free market depends on the policing of force and fraud. What it does not need is government intervening in private contractual relationships to choose economic winners and losers in order to achieve some desired social policy or objective.

When you start practicing protectionism, and slapping excises, taxes and tariffs left and right, the market is definitely not free... but who said that a free market was necessarily a desirable end?

I'm talking about your rejection of global free markets.

Well, of course, pragmatically, you can't have a global free market without some protections because Malawi is different than Norway, in terms of GDP, wages, technology, industry, and practically everything else. If you had two countries side by side, Norway and Malawi, and just opened the border and eliminated all regulatory or tariff distinctions, what's going to happen? Clearly, there is a huge incentive for folks to open a manufacturing plant in Malawi, rather than Norway. Sounds great, except if you live in Norway, and you need to spend 400 kroner to order Friday pizza take-out for your wife and two kids.
