Nobody asked how the human pancreas would not be attacked by the immune system of the pig while it was growing. Or are they going to give the pig fetus immuno-suppressing drugs all the way from conception?

I'm not certain, but I suspect this:

The immune system learns "self/not-self" as it develops, which is relatively late in development. If dividing human cells are present from virtually the beginning, the pig immune system will regard them as "self"

Yeh. I thought it might be something like that, but it depends how the immune system actually works. If it involves recognising dna, then you would think it's a non-starter.
But if it learns as it goes then this might be practical.
I would have thought though, that it worked on recognising it's own dna, and attacking anything that doesn't have it's own dna.
But that's just a guess. Maybe a fetus doesn't have an active immune system, until it's born. It might just rely on the mother's. So the human organs might be ok till the thing is actually born.
