Tsk, tsk. I was taught about the utter seriousness of guns when I was a kid. In fact, it's probably a case of what Seth describes as being "scared" of guns. That's how we treat them here in Australia, largely. Sure, it probably interferes with our ability to use them as freely as you guys would, but it means there's so few accidents here. And I'm thankful that my Dad taught me the seriousness of guns at a young age. He had a .22 at home, and I used play around with it (unloaded) when he wasn't there. But I used to treat it like I would if holding a snake. VERY carefully. And I knew where he kept the ammo too. This was back in the old days, and frankly, I'm glad those days are gone. Not every kid is as cluey and responsible as I was.

Yeah, I always knew where my dad kept his pistol too, and the possibility of being killed, or killing, even by accident was made clear to me. So the few times I did play with it I remember being scared shitless. He taught me how to shoot a .22 rifle, that was a lot of fun. Later in highschool I learned a bit more about shooting. I think it was an elective. They had a range and we learned more about safety, the rifle, how to set our sights, shoot etc. I don't think anyone at that point needed to be taught not to point the rifle at themselves, or anyone else.

I too learned my shooting from my dad. He had a single shot, bolt action .22, which I learned to shoot with. Later, I reduced the bunny population on my father in law's farm considerably with a neat little Ruger .22 automatic...

We had cadets at school, where I learned to shoot and field strip both the old Lee-Enfield 303 and the Bren gun...
