I'd rather take along some booze and snacks than let the host pay for the lot.
That way, people are more likely to throw a party, knowing it's not going to empty their wallet.

It's false ego to feel insulted if someone brings some beer or wine. Unless you want to feel and pose like a big shot for a day. which is a bit pathetic.
Sorry no. It is not a question of feeling like a big shot just general courtesy. If cant afford it dont do it just meet in a pub that is what they are for. I just found it weird as there was not general mixing as well as everyone kept their coolbox in sight. Mind you one of the problems was there was not a decent pub in the area. All neat detached houses but not a sod to be seen. It looked as if they had forgotten what legs are for. Even the 200 metres to the shops (well they claimed to be shops) had to be done by car.

It's not the done thing to throw a party unless you can supply all the alcohol and whatnots? Pretentious twat. Your mindset is a perfect example of why I am glad to be in Australia.

The real twats are the people who drink others beers at a bbq party without asking.

It is not pretentious. Having people coming round with coolboxes full of booze and standing over it in case someone takes it whilst not mixing. Sorry you go to a party to have a good time not to be anti-social. Give me a Dutch party any time. The ones I went to in Queensland were horrendous affairs.
Every body standing guard over his coolbox. Hardly moving a metre from it. Great fun was had by all and I dont think.

You must have weird friends to find yourself at a party like that.

In Ozland? That is what all I saw and I was told it was standard. Mind you it was weird there. Everybody living in cages because of flying bugs. Very little choice of fresh veg and meat. I was told everything had to be transported from Brisbane and Cairns was the end of the line.

I was not talking about your unfortunate association with low-lifers. I was talking about your attitude, namely that it's not the done thing to throw a party unless you can supply all the alcohol and whatnots.

Well it is not here. If you give a party you give it but parties are not common here. People meet at other venues where parties are organised. The Dutch dont open up their houses easily. You cant just drop in. They are a private nation when at home. If you wont to meet someone then go to a pub or restaurant.

Are low-lifers Queenslanders living in quite expensive suburbs?

Are you associating low-lifers with material poverty? Wouldn't surprise me if you did.

Well I dont come across them in my world here. These were friends and neighbours of my wife's cousin who was a producer on ABC and he a professor in Monash University of middle English.

I was in Cairns once. It was deader than Hobart.

I agree that northern Australia is another universe. That's just a reality of the tropics and also Australia's ancient soils. But the rest of Australia is far more normal than that.

I should mention, that the many Dutch I knew at university in Brisbane (there's a hell of a lot of Dutch doing postgraduate study here in Oz) had no problem socialising at Australian BBQs, and in fact were some of the more sociable people I have come across. I think this might be a Scott-centric problem... :tea:
