I watched an interesting doco the other night (which your post sort of reminded me of). It was a Louis Theroux show about this "prison" in the US where they are basically warehousing paedophiles until they die. So, convicted paedophiles who have served their sentence, but the government decided they weren't going to let them back into the community. So they stay in this "prison" til they die. Costs the government $200,000 per person per year. Anyway, they have a somewhat controversial rehabilitation program that aims to allow some of them to be released to the outside world if they pass the program. So there are a bunch of tests, including polygraphs, to see if these people are still attracted to kids. One of the tests was a little elasticated ring that goes around your dick and they measure whether you get any increase in girth (i.e. start cracking a fat) when they show you suggestive images of kids (or adults who look like kids) and other material that could arouse you. Basically, if you still got aroused by the sight of a kid, you were deemed to not be safe to be let out into the community. I'm going to have a paragraph break, because I need one.

What seemed weird about this is that imagine the people weren't paedophiles, but people attracted to adults. Virtually all of us have an attraction to adults, but just because we have an attraction to adults, doesn't mean we are all just going to go out and rape adults of our preferred sex. Can you imagine any ethical psychological treatment that would see you discard your attraction to, say, adult women? I can't. So it seems strange to think that you could psychologically remove the innate attraction to kids that paedophiles have. But this is basically what they are requiring. Apparently the success rate is miniscule, and the one success story the show highlighted underwent physical castration to remove his sexual attraction to kids (and presumably to adults too if he previously had that). Anyway, strange stuff.

Although, looking at the losers in the "prison", I doubt they have much chance at sex with an adult either. Coke bottle glasses wearing, Oily haired, moustachioed, mullet afflicted weirdos.

Yeah, they talked about that in the doco. The "success" case they covered, that I mentioned above, underwent chemical castration first. When he felt that it was successful at removing his urges, he opted for an irreversible physical procedure. That to me, if it worked, would seem to be the best way to go about "reform" of paedophiles. But then, if you were still planning to have children (or enjoy sex), it would be a major negative. Apparently very few in this "prison" chose to undergo castration of any sort. It seemed that the majority of them in there either didn't think they had a problem that needed addressing, or were libertarian types who just objected to the whole shebang for civil liberties reasons.
