Well, since Vikings were mostly fighting the Holy Roman Empire and the Anglo-Saxons, they could argue for "oppressed people reacting to their oppressor" status in the Progressive Stack. Would 'twere they weren't so white, though. That's problematic.

Well, not so fast. The Holy Roman Empire was pushing ever further into northern, non-Christian realms. The Vikings saw how the Empire converted pagan Anglo-Saxons, and they saw how the Empire swallowed up formerly free realms of Celts, Germans, Jutes, Angles and Saxons, etc. It was fight back against the privileged Christian Empire, or get swallowed up....

Norwegian upper class? Iceland was settled by Norwegians escaping oppression in Norway. For example, it was the trumped up charges of Harold Fairhair against Eirik the Red that had him forced into exile and outlawry in Iceland. The Irish blood in Iceland comes from the hermits and monks that moved to Iceland, understandably to get away from their countrymen.

Indeed, if there is one way everyone describes French colonial rule it's "benign, enlightened, compassionate good government." I don't think anyone disputes that.
