'More than 50' IS mass graves found in Iraq, says UN envoy

A UN envoy has said more than 50 mass graves have so far been found in parts of Iraq that were previously controlled by so-called Islamic State (IS).
Jan Kubis told the UN Security Council that it was "evidence of the heinous crimes" IS had committed.

The graves have been discovered in recent months as territory has been re-captured from IS.
Most recently, graves found in the city of Ramadi in April may contain the remains of up to 40 people.

Mr Kubis said the international community should "take steps to ensure the accountability" of IS fighters.
The Iraqi army re-captured parts of Ramadi from IS in December 2015. It had been held by the militants since May of the same year.
Some pockets of resistance continued in the city until February 2016, when it fell completely under government control again.

Human remains have been found in mass graves near Sinjar in northern Iraq, near Anbar in western Iraq and in Tikrit in northern Iraq.
The people targeted include tribesmen, Iraqi soldiers, women and people from the minority Yazidi sect.

Mass graves have also been found in parts of Syria where IS have held control.
Mr Kubis is the UN's special representative in its assistance mission for Iraq.
"I condemn in the strongest possible terms the continued killings, kidnapping, rape and torture of Iraqis by ISIL (IS), which may constitute crimes against humanity, war crimes and even genocide," he said.

Since many came from the UK, they should be let back in, then arrested and given a fair trial. Then the government needs to change the law so we can hang the twats. Doing it properly so the world see's justice done rather than rumours of collateral damage to keep the vendetta going.

bugger all that... they did not give fair trial to those they murdered, it took place out of the country, and even trying to bring back and try all those unnameables would just overextend the military power and penal system of the country... just bomb them into red mist

...in time drones with AI will be able to administer true justice on the field. As technology stands at present I can't side with a brute military solution to injustice. Small task forces and plenty of info on who the target is - that's another deal.

How many Japanese soldiers did the US Marines take prisoner among the 100,000 or so they met on Guadalcanal, New Britain, Tarawa, Peleliu, Iwo Jima, Saipan combined? Almost 2 dozen, right? It had to be at least two dozen...

Then they killed 100,000 Japanese soldiers in one fucking month on Okinawa...and took what, about 400 Japanese POWs?

for your comment to be relevant, one has to assume that ISIL fighters are as reluctant to surrender as the Japanese were...

Quite. People should get a fair trial before they are murdered.

A show trial is better than no trial at all. Beggars can't be choosers.

People should treat people the way they want to be treated, we would be dreadful boors to give them any kind of due process after they have made their wishes so plain.

Just use nerve gas. Isis would be wiped out in days and it's perfectly legal.
A rational skeptic should be able to discuss and debate anything, no matter how much they may personally disagree with that point of view. Discussing a subject is not agreeing with it, but understanding it.
