If the purpose is getting to work or the shops, then no, it doesn't defeat the purpose.

Another thing to burn coal for. Coal makes the electricity. Even here where we have wind 70% of days. The Goevenor (republican) did not see the sense in giving businessmen deals on windmills.

Possibly the extra weight might have enough impact to make that unwise for a bike, whereas it is not a significant impost on a car.
