“When I was in college, I took a terrorism class. ... The thing that was interesting in the class was every time the professor said ‘Al Qaeda’ his shoulders went up, But you know, it is that you don’t say ‘America’ with an intensity, you don’t say ‘England’ with the intensity. You don’t say ‘the army’ with the intensity,” she continued. “... But you say these names [Al Qaeda] because you want that word to carry weight. You want it to be something.” - Ilhan Omar

On a slightly different twist, I'd boot FDR off the dime and put Teddy there in his place. I'd replace Lincoln with James Buchanan too.
A rational skeptic should be able to discuss and debate anything, no matter how much they may personally disagree with that point of view. Discussing a subject is not agreeing with it, but understanding it.

Never heard of this Harriett Tubman character. Or most of the alternatives offered here. Except for that one Disney character.
Why not put women who have worldwide prestige on the bill, like Beyoncé or Marilyn Monroe instead of a bunch of local nobodies?

Lincoln is famous for winning the civil war. Buchanan is famous for trying to prevent it. Buchanan obviously failed, and was disliked by both north and south for trying to broker peace. Oh, and peace did not mean he liked slavery either.Forty Two wrote:Buchanan as a nod to the gays?Tyrannical wrote:On a slightly different twist, I'd boot FDR off the dime and put Teddy there in his place. Re: Harriett Tubman to go on the $20 bill
Australia has five banknotes. Since the mid 1990s women are well represented. In the current edition Nellie Melba is portrayed on the obverse of the 100 dollar bill. She was the first, and until Joan Sutherland appeared on stage the most prominent Australian opera singer who became internationally famous. At home she was more commonly sniggered at for her retirements. Her seemingly ceaseless farewell concerts gave rise to the idiom "doing a Melba", The meaning of which is akin to Shaker's law.

Edith Cowan occupies the obverse of the 50 dollar note. She was a social activist, especially concerning the rights and welfare of women and children, and became the first female member of an Australian parliament when she was elected to a seat in Western Australia's Legislative Assembly in 1921.

The reverse side of the 20 dollar note features Mary Reiby. She was caught stealing a horse in 1792 while disguised as a boy and sentenced to seven years in the penal colony downunder. There she married a junior naval officer and upon his death made a great success of their business ventures. She died extremely wealthy and was well regarded for her charitable works as well as her business acumen. Her reputation was neither enhanced nor diminished by her attempts to cover up the reason for her presence in Australia.

Mary Gilmore was a prolific writer both as a journalist and as a poet. She was also near the left fringe of the socialist spectrum. Although she never joined the Communist Party of Australia, she did contribute to its official paper, The Tribune. In addition to being Australia's most popular poet for half a century she was a tireless campaigner for better working conditions for working women, for children's welfare and for a better deal for the indigenous Australians. Gilmour is depicted on the reverse of the ten dollar note.

Queen Elizabeth II is featured on the obverse of the five dollar note, but probably not as a women's representative. She is also depicted on the obverse of all our coins. All but one of our coins feature fauna unique to Australia: echidna (5c), superb lyrebird (10c), platypus (20c), kangaroo & emu as part of the Australian coat of arms (50c), more kangaroos (1$). The one cent and two cent coins featuring a feathertail glider and a frill-necked lizard respectively, were taken out of circulation some years ago. The exception to the theme is an unidentified Aboriginal elder, which can give the unfortunate impression that he is part of the uniquely Australian fauna.
