I say bug 'em, they have a right to their speech, so do I, and my right to a public forum equals theirs, even if I choose to bugger the PC police up the pooper.

The Progressive Left in full, glorious flight! Counseling for students emotionally devastated by small sombreros.
http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world ... 15521.html
Activist students are calling for the expulsion of two members of the Student Council who attended the tequila party. Let that sink in .... expulsion...for wearing a tiny sombrero. You honestly could not make this up:
Apparently "taint" means something entirely different than it did in my days at Uni.

Of course Safe Spaces have been created.A university offered counselling to students “injured and affected” by a group of classmates who wore small sombrero hats to a tequila-themed birthday party.
....
After photos of party-goers wearing the miniature sombreros, several inches in diameter, appeared on social media, administrators at the college immediately sent out multiple emails notifying students about an “investigation” into a possible “act of ethnic stereotyping”.
"Active Bystander Training". What in the Seven Names of God's Holy Schlong does that mean? How in the fuck can you be a active bystander, and why would anyone need training to be one? Is there a test? A set of merit badges? What that actual fuck? The Bowdoin student newspaper reports that one of the tequila party’s hosts has been placed on “social probation” until March 2017, and must participate in an “educational program” and “active bystander training”. She has also been told to move out of her room and has been banned from this year’s Spring Gala.

OMFG they have TAINTED the college experience! TAINTED IT!What these students did [is they] tainted the experiences of college students, first year students on this campus, They feel trapped to be in this place, that if they transfer they’ll lose their financial aid, and that’s wrong.
Apparently "taint" means something entirely different than it did in my days at Uni.
Yeah well that's just, like, your opinion, man.

Sure, but they are taking it a step further to: (a) enlist college administrations to silence those they oppose, and (b) taking violent action to suppress the freedom of speech of others.Svartalf wrote:I say bug 'em, they have a right to their speech, so do I, and my right to a public forum equals theirs, even if I choose to bugger the PC police up the pooper.
When you have a college professor enlisting a mob of "muscle" to force a member of the student media out of a public space by pushing him and shoving him and intimidating him -- google Melissa Click -- then you have the establishment -- the administration -- censoring the press and the individual liberty of free expression and free association.
I say bug 'em too, but their right of free speech does not include silencing others. If instead of Melissa Click, it was a "right wing" professor who was trying to enlist muscle to kick out a reporter from a feminist publication from covering a "men's rights" rally, what would be the general reaction and the reaction of the law?

sue them, then... I do suppose courts dole out demages generously for depriving people of their basic rights... and universities would step down on such threats to their endowments once precendent gets established.

Re: Radical Leftist Disillusioned By Leftist Culture
Only the people effected can sue them. And, those people often don't have the means to do so, and they get expelled etc. Plus, the schools are under pressure to crack down on anything the regressive left complains about because they are scared of Title IX suits. If a school lets students have sombrero parties without comment after it is brought to their attention, then some fucking little shit leftist is going to sue for a Title IX violation claiming that his or her right to an education is being deprived because of the offensive party and such. What's crazy is that I'm not exaggerating.Svartalf wrote:sue them, then... law against discrimination in education -- it's being used now to sue universities that don't "do enough" to make the educational opportunities equal, and this is being used as a vehicle to shut people up. Like, if the university tolerates lots of anti-feminist stuff going on, and it upsets some female students, they start claiming that the offensive stuff is causing their education to be unequal.Svartalf wrote:What's title IX already?
Example, Professor Laura Kipnis of Northwestern University (that's a major university, not some little college) who was brought up on accusations of harassment under Title IX because she wrote an article or two in the college newspaper that was critical of the university's policies and practices concerning sexual assault cases. Students that were not even in her class filed complaints, and Kipnis was put through three years of inquisition before she won her case.

OK, so you can, presumably successfully launch title IX actions because of frat party and offensive speech? ok, I'm flabbergasted at the judges who don't dismiss quickly.
and flabbergasted again that they don't strike the plaintiff with contempt for frivolous action or whatever your system provides for in such cases

So is everyone who watches this shit unfold, Svarty.
There are mini sombreros on tequila bottles, and they're SOLD in PUBLIC! Imagine how many poor little snowflakes are damaged every DAY seeing this!
It's unconscionable.

Look at the label! It's RACIST! It's ethnic appropriation of the worst sort! Someone needs to swing for this.

Not exactly that - but, what they are looking to do is launch a Title IX action and use the college's lack of action against students' unsavory opinions or politically incorrect parties as evidence that the school maintains an hostile education environment.Svartalf wrote:OK, so you can, presumably successfully launch title IX actions because of frat party and offensive speech? ok, I'm flabbergasted at the judges who don't dismiss quickly.

They aren't damaged. This is ideological. They are trying to shut people up.

You know what, I guess that what you got is shitty judges... replace themm with real professionals who know more about the law than about getting elected and who think about meting out justice rather than about getting reelected, you might see an improvement.

Well, first amendment rights are more important than a supposedly 'hostile' environment... let the poor little snowflakes provide more robust evidence than people partying in blackface or with little sombreros or let them be held in contempt.Forty Two wrote:Not exactly that - but, what they are looking to do is launch a Title IX action and use the college's lack of action against students' unsavory opinions or politically incorrect parties as evidence that the school maintains an hostile education environment.Svartalf wrote:OK, so you can, presumably successfully launch title IX actions because of frat party and offensive speech? ok, I'm flabbergasted at the judges who don't dismiss quickly.

From everything I've seen or read of the current University scene in Australia (and my youngest son has just done a degree in one), we really have very little of that extremely aggressive PC crap here, as rEv has already said...
Nurse, where the fuck's my cardigan?
And my gin!

Nope, it's the law that's shitty. The judges are following the law. The schools are stuck having to follow the advice of their attorneys who have to tell them that they can't ignore racism or sexism on campus. What that means is that they have to punish it. And, since this is in the eye of the beholder, what happens is they opt for the "don't take any chances" route, because that costs less. They don't give a fuck if some group can't have a sombrero party. They care about making sure that nobody can claim the administration turns a blind eye to "cultural appropriation" and "racism," so they make sure they can say "see! when we found out about this possible cultural appropriation and racist party, we took prompt action to investigate and punish those involved, and send everyone to sensitivity training, so you can't hold us responsible if you're upset by it..."Svartalf wrote:You know what, I guess that what you got is shitty judges... replace themm with real professionals who know more about the law than about getting elected and who think about meting out justice rather than about getting reelected, you might see an improvement.
