The Thread of BREXIT
The time isn't nigh but it is nearly nigh (the time that is), when the peoples of this Sceptred Isle get to resolve the vexed question of whether the European Union deserves us or not. Should we stay or should we go? If we stay there will be....no, I'm not doing that.
It's the most momentous geopolitical decision of the 21st century so far. I mean, an EU without Blighty is like The Beatles with just Ringo.

Re: The Thread of BREXIT
BREXIT could set things in motion though. Things of much needed attention and change or reform of the union. One thing to keep in mind, which as it looks the Germans and French realize well. Without participation its hard to influence things. But yeah essentially its cost/benefit analysis.

Re: The Thread of BREXIT
The information being provided by opposing sides is contradictory, opaque, spun and generally messed around with to suit their arguments - certainly the financial side of it. It is close to impossible to work out whether were would be fiscally better off or not in vs out. The other main area of contention appears to be about governance and sovereignty. Personally I don't give a monkey's on that score.
Union is better than fragmentation to my way of thinking and that's the size of it. The sooner we demolish the nation state the better. So I'm for a United States of Europe!

Indeed, it's exactly like the Scottish Independence referendum, only important. Nobody knows whether we would better off or not and the less the Stay or Leave camps know, the more certain they are.Rum wrote:The information being provided by opposing sides is contradictory, opaque, spun and generally messed around with to suit their arguments - certainly the financial side of it. Re: The Thread of BREXIT
Global competition ( BRICS, NAFTA) does not indeed favour fragments, in general. Is UK (economy) like Swiss or Norway or does it just want to be .. special? You are special, worry not! United in diversity is EU motto. Forget pound that is irrelevant. Nobody gonna take your fish and chips, humour or weather either. Question is, how united.

Re: The Thread of BREXIT
UK has been shitting in the salad ever since they were let in.
Let them become real Europeans and integrate with the rest of us, or go away and play lapdogs to the US while complaining that their economic relations with the rest of Europe are not what they used to be.

Lets just get the fuck out already.
We should be MOST skeptical of ideas we like because we are sufficiently skeptical of ideas that we don't like. Penn Jillette.
Re: The Thread of BREXIT
I agree with Rum's idealistic desire to see the end of the nation state, however the problem with that is that the power at the top becomes stronger and, worse, more remote from the wider population.
I suspect that fiscally (quicker to adapt and change tack) and politically (more accountable) nippy little nation states will eventually win out over huge blocs.
