"The" topic? This thread is about Democrat Primaries/Caucuses - Discussions, Jokes and Predictions. Bernie Sanders is a Democrat candidate for President and is involved in the Caucuses and primaries and the exchange between laklak and I was a bit of pointed jabbing at Bernie Sanders.

You keep saying that, but you never explain what's wrong with it. All quotes, by definition, are out of context. However, the basic gist of what de Tocqueville was writing was that there was an irreconcilable conflict between democracy and socialism. Democracy attaches value to each person individually, whereas socialism makes each person a mere agent of the State. It's the same quote Hayek used in "Road to Serfdom." If you would like to explain the context you're referring to, then please, by all means, explain it.

Saying "your material is shit" is not a rebuttal of the material, and calling it "ignorant" is, well, an insult to Alexis De Tocqueville, who cannot be counted as ignorant on this topic. Out of context is for you to show -- does the quote mean something different than what it says when in context? I have an English translation of de Tocqueville's original "Discours..." from which the quote is drawn. But, since you already know that it's "out of context" you must already be quite familiar with that writing. I'll let ;you work from your copy, or the online translation. Shall I hold my breath while I wait?

Oh jabbing .. well, that is beyond my abilities to detect. My fault then. Alexis de Tocqueville died in 1859 according to Google. Of course he is ignorant. That is problem with many if not all historical thinkers. They lack knowledge we have today thus their wisdom is often lacking, in todays world. OK I am green, no hard feelings?
