Cruz is scarier than Trump, as he'd have more congressional support. But he's still constrained by the Constitution and SCOTUS. Folks here often complain about worshiping the Constitution, but it's what stands between us and theocratic despotism, even with Cruz and a Bible thumping Congress. Nobody's managed to destroy the Union in over two centuries, that little weasel faced fuck won't do it either. We got guns.

I'm thinking along the same lines as rEv. Supreme court judges have to interpret what the constitution "really" means. At the moment the bench is stacked with very conservative ones. Among them Scalia is almost as scary as Cruz.

The SCOTUS tends to surprise is, though.

Republican Earl Warren came to the court spearheaded the SCOTUS' rulings on all areas of individual liberties, from right to privacy, contraception, race (Brown vs Board of Ed), religion (religion out of schools), the rights of the criminally accused (Miranda rights).

People forget this a lot, especially Republicans. The Republican led SCOTUS expanded individual rights in the 1950s and 1960s, and the Republicans in Congress are the ones who overwhelmingly supported the Civil Rights Acts in the mid-1960s.

Take Roe v Wade. The justices voted 7-2 in favor of abortion rights. And, Blackmun, Powell and Burger were Nixon appointees, Brennan and Stewart were Eisenhower appointees. The only two dissents were Rhenquist and White, and White was appointed by John F. Kennedy (Rhenquist was by Nixon, who also appointed three of the justices who sided with the majority).

When the GOP got overrun by the religious nutters, everything went downhill fast.
