Live updates as 1,000 jobs expected to be cut at Tata steelworks in Port Talbot and Llanwern

Staff at the Tata steelworks in Wales will today be told of huge cuts that will see up to 1,000 job losses at plants in Port Talbot and Llanwern.

The biggest cuts are expected to hit Port Talbot, the UK's biggest steelworks, as the industrial giant responds to the growing crisis gripping the UK steel sector.

It's believed 750 jobs will be cut at Port Talbot and another 300 at other Tata sites in the UK, including Llanwern.

A Welsh Government spokesman said it was “well known that Tata, like the rest of the steel industry, has been facing extremely challenging operating conditions”, but refused to comment further.

Yeah. But at least you've still got a car industry of sorts. Ours has more or less pulled the pin as of next year (or the year after). Holden (GM) and Ford are making their last Australian cars then, and Toyota is shutting up building international models here (that is, it's closing altogether here). Mitsubishi went a good few years ago. Many many thousands of jobs going or gone and many flow on jobs will be lost (i.e. the local industries machining parts for the Australian cars).

There's been a typical story in the news this week: A Nickel refinery owned by a billionaire who went into politics a few years ago is going into administration (not before sacking about 300 workers in one day last week). The ridiculousness of the story is that over the last few years the company donated more than 5 million dollars (a lot in terms of Australian politics) to said billionaire's political party. This only just came out in the news recently, after months of begging the government to bail his company out. His problem was that he'd made so many enemies in the Queensland state (and the federal) government that nobody gave a fuck about his whining (and indeed, they probably knew about him funnelling money out of the company to his own political party). Welcome to corporatism! (at least in this instance it failed).

This story highlights his true colours. It's the only reason he got into politics. And all he has to do is keep slagging off the professional pollies and the disaffected lap it up. At least he's taking the idea of ridiculing the professional political set into the mainstream. He's actually quite good at rubbishing them.
