But I have a difficult time believing a person couldn't recognise the smell of their own bottom burps, and mistake someone else's for their own.

Well, yes, society and cultural norms discourage women from farting, but male farts are considered funny. The unfair expectations on women that they not fart, even though it is a natural biological function, is a form of misogyny and sexism. It's further exercise of power by the patriarchy to control women's bodies.

Fart rape occurs when unconsented farting occurs, and women are subjected to nasal penetration of the fart odor. If a woman were to fart, the males would only fart louder and thereby oppress women with their farts, thereby further discouraging women from farting.

Until men treat women's farts the same as men's farts, there can be no equality between the sexes.

this issue came to light at a recent conference where a feminist was going up to her room at the Hilton. Just before the doors closed, a man entered the elevator. She had plainly advised everyone at the conference that she did not like farts, and that she was staying on the top floor of the hotel. The man on the elevator ignored her autonomy. Not only did he ride up only one floor on the elevator and exit on the second floor, but just before the doors opened, he left an SBD on the elevator for the feminist to endure all the way to the top floor of the hotel. She was, indeed subjected to fart rape.
