A new use is coming up for copper. Research on the ability of copper to kill viruses and bacteria are hugely impressive.
Look out for copper door knobs, copper surfaces all over hospitals in the future :

The figures that they give for reduction of hospital infections are hugely impressive.
And one amazing titbit is that the copper doesn't need to even touch the bacteria. It has a "halo" effect, killing or reducing growth of bacteria by about seventy percent, within half a metre of the copper itself.
So instead of a complete copper surface, you could just have speckles of copper in the surface material.

Or a slight dusting of copper in disposable gloves, and hospital sheets etc etc.
The possibilities look endless.
