Sign of a future merger, or at least financial courtship, between twitter and facebook maybe? I mean why else should they wish to change their nomenclature to match facebook's, the system was obviously functional as it was.

Many users are known to the star and the term "favorite" as a functionality in software (e.g. web browsers) as a method to privately store items for later use. While the Twitter favs are public and by many users used to express "I like this tweet". Changing twitter fav star to like heart prevents this kind of misunderstanding.
