Wales Trending To Basket Case Economy (Bevan Report)

Bevan Foundation's bleak vision of 2020 Welsh economy

More unqualified workers chasing low paid, insecure jobs is the bleak vision of Wales in 2020, according to a think-tank.
If forecasts are correct, the gap in productivity between Wales and the UK will widen, analysis from the Bevan Foundation suggests.
It predicts more professional but fewer lower skilled jobs, which make up a significant part of Wales' economy.
But the Wales Office said wages and living standards are both improving.

The foundation urges radical approaches.

The Merthyr Tydfil-based think-tank has brought together economic, education, environment and health forecasts.
It gives three scenarios and if the current forecasts are correct, the outlook for Wales in five years is "far from rosy".

Don't need to, Cardiff's tech industry is booming. We have people trying to recruit us away from our already good jobs all the time. Perhaps there is an issue then with the technical middle class growing whilst the traditional working class dwindles.

:dunno:
South Wales is one of the best places in the country to set up a digital business with a vibrant network of entrepreneurs to share ideas and good access to public finance, according to a report from Tech City.

The Tech Nation report places South Wales in the top five of the UK’s fastest growing “digital clusters”, with Bournemouth, Liverpool, Inner London, and Brighton and Hove.

School children in Wales are forced to talk in a funny voice, and phlob all over each other.

This is reducing standards of education in area the size of Wales.

So that when they leave school, all that they are fit for is a low-skilled job in the lanolin industry.
While there is a market for shit, there will be assholes to supply it.

Propagating the very thing that is lowering standards? Media stuff, disruptive technologies that are easily disrupted themselves? 50/50 over five years. Need some traditional industries - can't live on dreams forever - especially when revenues are gonna drop through the floor come the next downturn, folks will go back to piracy. To really catch up Wales needs to be into the next wave of reality, before it happens 3d printing. http://3dprint.com/92027/materials-solutions-siemens/

I think Wales has done a fantastic job of reinventing itself. I was born in the valleys and saw them die as the mines shut. I'm no romantic - the mines were dirty and dangerous and mining was horrible, but the industry built a massive sense of community which slowly died too with the industry.

Then I saw, when I visited, the slag heaps slowly cleared away and grassed over, clean factories being built where once coal mine lifting gear stood and the valleys regaining something of their original beauty. It is a beautiful country and its people are resilient. The fortunes of different areas of the country go up and go down. Ever was it so.

The doom merchants, of which we have an excellent example on this forum, can go fuck themselves.

That won't happen for weeks. Maybe even a couple of months. Let's worry about more pressing matters first...

The planned expansion has been reduced by 35% due to government cuts, so we should be ok for a while.

These reductions are misdirection used to keep us from seeing the real threat i.e. "aliens".
