Ashley Madison infidelity site's customer data 'leaked'

Customer data stolen from Ashley Madison, a dating website for married people who wish to cheat on their spouse, has reportedly been published.
The data has reportedly been leaked on the so called dark web, meaning it is accessible only via encrypted browsers.

The BBC did not access the data and was not able to verify its authenticity.

Hackers stole the data last month and threatened to reveal it unless the match making site for married people was taken down.

Technology website Wired said 9.7 gigabytes of data was posted, and the material appeared to include members accounts and credit card details.
The hackers, who called themselves the Impact Team, said they had managed to steal the real names and addresses of the site's users, including those who had previously paid to "delete" their accounts.

It's possible to provide fake names and addresses with prepaid cards, although they've been trying to make it more difficult for cards that can be used outside the US.

Just some happily married bloke whose only vice is hanging around lots of catholic boys under the pretext of teaching them numerology.

Is this signalling a trend towards extreme moralist terrorism, and will it mean that some group will form to publish the personal data of the people who published the dater on the cheaters website? Where will it end and will the invention of the time machine finally put these questions to rest?

You mean whistle blowers like Assange, Snowdon, Manning et cetera were categorically different?

I kind of look forward to someone sifting through the list and identifying who among its members are vocal and public proponents of "family values" such as honesty and fidelity. Looks as though the discovery of a few high level evangelists (e.g. Haggard, Bakker and Swaggart) failed to bring showy fundamentalism down. Maybe a massive exposure of lower ranking functionaries will be more effective at whiteanting their institutions.

The hackers’ motives are unclear. In their statements they denounce the “fraud, deceit and stupidity” of both Ashley Madison’s parent company, Avid Life Media, and the site’s users. Their complaint against Avid Life is supposedly that the site is a scam, because the vast majority of its users are men, who have to buy credits to access its services. But Impact Team’s supposed sympathy for these dupes is hard to square with the hackers’ decision to release all the data, and their moralising exhortation to the people thus exposed: “learn your lesson and make amends”. It seems most likely that Impact Team, like other hacker groups before it, is simply doing this for fun.

Hackers love showing off. This hack was bound to create a vast amount of media attention, which made it a perfect scenario. Compare it to hacking a site where people swap recipes or knitting patterns. Ho hum would be the media response...
