mistermack just said that, of which I already responded.JimC wrote:The statistics collected are utterly different in nature between the 2 reports, both in the nature of the data, and the definitions of violence. One would require further information, and the services of a professional statistician with many hours to spare if one wanted to make a valid comparison of violence in the 2 countries.

Those numbers have been debunked many times over the past five years or more. One good example of analysing why they are bullshit was published in a US web site named Skeptical Libertarian. It is definitely worth a read.Collector1337 wrote:You must be bringing this up because you are afraid of numbers like this:

250% less than your graphic claimed. That's one hell of an error margin. And as update #1 to the article makes clear, 776 represents the worst case scenario. The best case scenario is 271. The actual figure probably lies somewhere in between, which pretty much blows the numbers you cite and the underlying tenor out of the water.Collector1337 wrote:"but if we must compare the two, my best estimate‡ would be something like 776 violent crimes per 100,000 people."Hermit wrote:Those numbers have been debunked many times over the past five years or more. What is more, have a look at this graph and keep in mind that gun control in the UK was tightened in 1997:

So much for the "more guns less crime" mantra. As far as the UK is concerned, that mantra just does not fit the facts.
