Taxing billionaires has its appeal. The only problem is that they have too many friends in power, meaning it would never happen.

Nor am I seriously suggesting drowning all pets and giving the $800 per household to charity, because I know that lots of pet owners would rather kill another human than get rid of their pets.

However, it struck me as an interesting statistic, and perhaps a comment on people's priorities.

An interesting factoid is that the largest population of tigers anywhere is the USA. Apparently there are many thousand in captivity, and a high percentage is as pets. There is no way I would keep a vicious animal like a tiger as a pet, but I guess if there is a market for them, and people breeding them, they are not about to go extinct.

As has been explained to you, it's not just limited to pets. It's widespread across all sorts of first world lifestyle choices, like SCUBA diving. My view is that this issue needs to be tackled at the national/international level. Governments should institute proper fair trade policies and stop fucking demonising the poor and unemployed in their home countries that are likely that way due to the structural negatives of "free" trade.
