What has happened to music?
What the fuck?
I'm watching Glastonbury Festival, for want of anything on the telly.
Nothing but shite, or stuff that would have only been holiday camp standard, thirty or forty years ago.
Why is it? I have a theory. It's since electronic keyboards and synths and mixers and drum machines were invented.
You don't have to make your own beat any more. You don't need to invent. It's too easy when people are starting out. They are all great tools, but they kill innovation.
It's like the car and the computer. Brilliant tools, but now everyone is flabby and unfit.
If Beethoven was born today, he'd be churning out drivel.
There always was rubbish alongside the good stuff, but now it's nothing but rubbish. That's the difference

I remember Haydn saying something similar about that upstart, Mozart. And don't even get me started on Beethoven, Mahler and Ozzy Osbourne!

Not to mention Bach. He totally destroyed plainsong. Moronic bastid.
As if that were not bad enough, along came that newfangled instrument, the pianoforte. It sounded the death knell to good music.

Re: What has happened to music?
Whether you like them or not, (me, mostly not), the classical guys are still being enjoyed and appreciated today.
The Beatles and Stones have plenty of young kids listening to their music and playing it today.
What the fuck from today, will be listened to in forty years time, by young kids?
I'm not saying that the top sellers are shite. Most of them have always been shite. But there was always good stuff tucked in there somewhere.

Who cares how old someone or something is, as long as it's good?mistermack wrote:Yeh. He's a classy act. But he's in his seventies, and he's doing stuff from forty years ago.Brian Peacock wrote:Been listening g on 6music. George Clinton was laying down the funk ok.
FKA Twigs did a massive set. Gregory Porter was fab. Gaz Coombes was surprisingly gritty. Christ, I even found myself nodding along to Kanye West even though he did declare himself the greatest living rock star in the whole history of history, and had his pomp bubble deflated when Lee Nelson jumped on stage!

Anyway, George Clinton is entertaining, without being memorable or great.
And that goes for the others you mentioned. Nobody's going to be doing their stuff into the future.
And Kanye West is nothing special, but you can tell he's spending a huge amount of money on production, you would expect some of it to work.
It's a very well-decorated turd.

Re: What has happened to music?

Review of Kanye in the Observer this morning has him as a lonely figure, lost on a massive stage and disengaged from his audience. Actually the huge amount of coverage he's had in that paper this morning is pretty disappointing - it's sucking all the juice out of the festival and monopolising the exposure of one artist to the detriment of all the other stuff going on.
Just heard some of The Vaccines set. I like The Vaccines.

Re: What has happened to music?
Kanye West will get the headlines, because his name might sell a few more copies of a shitty paper. It's the Muhammed Ali philosophy. Arrogance gets headlines, and headlines sell tickets.
He obviously spends a huge amount on kit and lighting and musicians.
A lot of people are taken in by that ''big star'' pantomime.
That's how Madonna stayed so successful.
