US toddler kills himself with mother's gun

A three-year-old boy has killed himself while playing with his mother's handgun, according to police in Ohio.

The boy shot and fatally wounded himself in the chest after finding the gun at his home near Cincinnati.
In a 911 audiotape release by police, the boy's mother Elizabeth Green is heard reporting the incident.

"My son just shot himself and I'm not getting a pulse," she is heard screaming. Prosecutors are considering whether to charge her.
In the call, she said she keeps the gun in her purse and had set the purse down at home before the tragedy.

"The gun is mine. It is in the house, I carry it in my purse, I laid it down. We just got home," the mother told the 911 operator.
The boy has been identified as Marques Green, according to local media.

A detective was seen leaving the home with a small black handgun, and placing it into an evidence bag.

This is the second accidental shooting death of a child this month in this region of Ohio.

No, just very poor judgment on mom's part. Very sad indeed. This is why one carries one's firearm in a holster physically attached to one's body or locks it up in a child-resistant container when one has children around. Purses, fanny packs, satchels, briefcases and other containers that can be forgotten, left behind, or left unattended even for a moment are entirely unsuitable for carrying handguns.

Rasmussen: Only 1 in 5 Americans Want to Live Where They Can’t Be Armed

A Rasmussen poll released on June 12 shows that only one out of five Americans want to live in a place where they can’t be armed.

According to Rasmussen, “68 percent” of Americans “prefer living in a neighborhood where they have the option of owning a gun.” Only “22 percent” desire to live “in a neighborhood where nobody was allowed to own a gun.”

The other “10 percent” of respondents were not sure how they felt.

These findings support the Pew Poll–released December 2014–which showed that “52 percent” of respondents believed “it [was] more important to protect the right of Americans to own guns” than to pass more controls on gun ownership. “46 percent” of respondents supported more controls.

The PEW Poll represented the first time in over two decades that the majority of the American people turned on gun control to embrace gun rights. More importantly, it was a turn that began just months after Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV), President Obama, and Michael Bloomberg went on a gun grabbing expedition following the heinous attack on Sandy Hook.

Numbers in support of gun rights grew from those early months after Sandy Hook until December 2014 and now, with the Rasmussen poll, it is clear that the number of those in support of gun rights has continued to grow.

Yeah, the gun is merely incidental - it's moms who who should be banned.

Stop hitting on Seth, you guys!

Let's face it, it's much better to have a few dead infants every week than the anarchy we have in the UK, where there are no well-armed, open-carry crusaders to defend us against.... well, you know, all that stuff that we have to suffer here. :tea:

Guns don't kill people.

Toddlers kill people.

Well, the right to keep and bear arms doesn't mean that there can't be rules about its safe use and handling. Guns are deadly. Anyone owning one should know how to use it, care for it and store it.

I have a little girl who is toddler age. i can't imagine how it must feel to be in that mom's situation. Tragic.

Strangely enough, no one in my rather large extended family has ever shot anyone purposefully or accidentally. To my knowledge no kids have ever gotten hold of a gun. This despite being armed to the freaking teeth, and many (if not most) of us having CCW permits. Wonder what's going on? Are we a statistical anomaly? The exception that proves the rule? Or maybe being taught about firearm safety from a young age has something to do with it.

Actually there was at least one purposeful shooting when my Dad topped himself, but that falls into a slightly different category. If he hadn't had a gun he'd have run the Jag into a bridge embankment at 150.

Every one of your extended family live with the knowledge that the country is seething with guns. You are used to it. It seems normal to you, you've never known everything else.
Whenever you have an argument with a stranger, or witness a row in your vicinity, you have to wonder if one of the loonies will start shooting.

It's not just the numbers killed. It's the shitty effect it has on the quality of life.

But as I've said before, if you live on a dungheap, you don't notice the stink.

No disagreement there at all. Fact is though that the vast majority of gun owners do exactly that. A few (actually very few) tragic situations in no way justify infringing on the rights of everyone.

Terrible, horrible situation.

So do you. You just refuse to acknowledge that fact.

My quality of life is just fine. It's improved by knowing that I'm able to defend myself and others in the event of a violent criminal attack. The only reason you think your quality of life is better is because you are psychotically refusing to acknowledge that such dangers exist in every society on earth and always have. You live in a fairy-tale world of unicorns farting rainbows and are divorced from reality due to a mental aberration that affects most well-indoctrinated mentally defective liberals.

You just happen to be lucky so far. Here's hoping your luck holds, because if it doesn't, you're just completely fucked.
But as I've said before, if you live on a dungheap, you don't notice the stink.
Which describes your life perfectly. We, on the other hand, recognize that there are heaps of dung scattered about society so we take precautions not to step in them and clean them up when necessary.
