Does the human rights act matter?
- Here’s what will effectively be scrapped by the Tories:
- The right to life
- The right not to be tortured
- The right not to be a slave
- The right to a fair trial
- The right NOT to be punished if you haven’t broken the law
- The right to private family life
- The right to freedom of thought, conscience, and religion
- The right to freedom of expression
- The right to marry and start a family
- The right to peaceful enjoyment of possessions
- The right to education
- The right to free elections
- The right NOT to be given to death penalty

What the tories object to (as I understand it - and I am playing a MASSIVE Devil's Advocate here!) is not the provisions of the HRA, but its interpretation by the European Court of Justice. They would rather decide for themselves whether or not they can lock up a terror suspect without trial, attach electrodes to George Galloway's bollocks, or make some raghead imam swim back to Islamistan with a scud missile up his arse. Seems legit.

A book is a version of the world. If you do not like it, ignore it; or offer your own version in return.

Sounds like nice pairing with your ubiquitous security cameras.
When everyone goes underground, that's where they'll look first. Try to weaponize your belt buckles and kitchen utensils, as urban dwellers have little in the way of farm implements.

Tories are unleashing ancient forces they are completely unaware of in the modern age. Each and every Englishman would be a law unto himself if he could. This makes it easy to wake the curse of many fiefdoms.

While I'm more than suspicious of tory interpretation of human rights (them toffs don't even believe the common man to be human in the first place), I can get the national sovereignty in interference from Brussels/the Hague issue.Xamonas Chegwé wrote:What the tories object to (as I understand it - and I am playing a MASSIVE Devil's Advocate here!) is not the provisions of the HRA, but its interpretation by the European Court of Justice. Quite a few human rites are interesting spectacles; they do matter as significant components of culture...

When you wad up your constitutions every 45 years and toss them over your shoulders, the only continuity you maintain is the old manor house.
Law and order is the cornerstone of civilization. The "consent and guarantee of the governed" is the only foundation of laws worth fighting for. Nothing matters unless others say it does.

Water under the bridge....human rights. Only makes fat lawyers fatter these days. Unlike in the past when it made fat lawyers fatter.piscator wrote:That nihilism's a bite-in-the-ass, ain'tit?

I suspect they do more than that. What do you do with yours?

Sounds like a good idea, sometime it might come along. There is a history of heroic failures upto this point.piscator wrote:Was referring to [your] "Human rights". But you knew that already.

Re: Does the human rights act matter?
It may be of some interest to me. I've lived, and watched injustice and wars and so forth. And noticed how some play word games with facts, and make hideous sorts of money out of the misery of this world. I've got no answer though. Destroy the failed projects - nihilism. That is me.piscator wrote:What does that have to do with you, or the question?
