The world's former fattest man - who once tipped the scale at 70 stone - has revealed how he has taken his first steps following surgery to remove three stone of excess flesh.

Paul Mason is keeping his supporters up-to-date with his progress as he recovers in hospital in New York after undergoing surgery to remove the overstretched skin on Tuesday.

The former postman was left with the folds of flesh after he lost a staggering 46 stone following a gastric band operation in February 2010.

'Today was the first day I really noticed how different my legs feel,' Mr Mason wrote on his Facebook account today.

'Like thin wafers compared to big tree trunks.'

He took his first steps on Thursday.

'Was able to take a few steps today with the help of Dr. Capla and a nurse,' he revealed. 'A little further each day.'

Mr Mason, who is originally from Ipswich, has also shared pictures of himself with Dr Jennifer Capla, taken moments before he was wheeled into surgery at the Lennox Hill Hospital.

The surgeon revealed Mr Mason had lost another three stone on her Facebook page.

Fiancee Rebecca Mountain, who is a slender eight stone, wrote on his fundraising page that Mr Mason would now be able to do simple things he had not been able to do before the procedure.

''There are no words to express how incredible this surgery will be for Paul,' she said.

'Everyday things most of us take for granted will now be possible for him, like getting into a car without a struggle and going to the movies and sitting in a regular seat.

He didn't have to go anywhere. He just had to wait a while until the doctors were happy that he was maintaining a stable weight. If he doesn't - if he loses significantly more weight he will have more excess skin to be removed again later, - and possibly worse, if he gains weight rapidly again the remaining skin might be stretched too tight. He's gone to the US to have a potentially wasteful or possibly risky, largely cosmetic operation. Best of luck to the guy, but don't blame the doctors at the NHS for being sensible.

This actually illustrates the dangers in the american system.
In the UK, they wouldn't do this procedure till it was clear what his long-term outcome was going to be. For the good and safety of the patient.

In the US, fuck the patient, they grabbed the cash.

Until he dies, in other words. It's rationing and you know it.

If he doesn't - if he loses significantly more weight he will have more excess skin to be removed again later, - and possibly worse, if he gains weight rapidly again the remaining skin might be stretched too tight.
And that's a bigger problem than the fact that he can't move and could die of a heart attack or stroke any second? Puhleeze!

He's gone to the US to have a potentially wasteful or possibly risky, largely cosmetic operation. Best of luck to the guy, but don't blame the doctors at the NHS for being sensible.
Hey, in the UK he had a RIGHT to that health care. That's what socialized medicine touts. If you need health care, you get it, no matter what, no matter when, no matter how much it costs.

Liars the bunch of them. They rationed this guy's right to health care because it would cost the NHS "too much" to attempt to fix him and the results might not be a whopping success they could pander about. No, he might not lose weight, he might die under the knife, or he might put the weight back on and that would be an embarrassment to the NHS and a waste of public money, so they valued their reputation and their budget above his medical needs, just exactly as I predicted every socialized medical care system on the planet does.

And so he came to America, appealed for help, and got it done for free. Go figure.

Bullshit. They just didn't want to waste resources on a morbidly obese person, so they said "no," because they could.

Evidently you missed the part where he got it done for nothing.

No, they said no for the good of the patient. And him losing another three stone proves that.

while the nhs wasn't willing to snip off the excess skin in a hurry, the man did get his gastric band operation done. that is a fairly expensive procedure.

it's true that the nhs is creaking under the strain, but it still beats having no system at all.

The American who had the worlds largest bollocks [ each one as big as his head ] was denied surgery since
he had inadequate health insurance and no one offered to help him. Eventually he did have the operation
but should not have had to wait for it as long as he did. And no one should be denied surgery just because
they can not afford it. And having taxpayers fund a national health service is the best way to prevent that

Sucks to be him. He should have paid for better insurance or saved up some money. Why should anyone else be required by law to contribute to his bollocks operation? His bollocks are not my problem, I've got my own medical problems to deal with so he can't have any of my money. Sorry.

You commend these altruistic Americans for paying for the operation that one man needs while at the
same time seeing absolutely no reason why they should pay for the operation that another man needs
That makes absolutely no sense at all. By the way if you lived over here your medical problems could
probably be sorted without you having to directly pay for them. Which would give you peace of mind

It says he went to the US to be with his fiance. He could have had the procedure done through private healthcare in the UK to.

Hmm. I'm wondering how a system that treat one on one's ability to pay, and will treat you, admittedly to the highest standards, until you no longer have that ability, is better or fairer. Seems to me that what right-leaning misanthropes don't like is the thought that their tax money being spent providing services to people they don't personally approve of.
Rationalia relies on voluntary donations. There is no obligation of course, but if you value this place and want to see it continue please consider making a small donation towards the forum's running costs.
Details on how to do that can be found here.

Didn't cost him a dime. And everybody who paid for it, paid for it completely voluntarily out of the goodness of their hearts, not because some jackbooted thug demanded it from them at gunpoint.
