Future Russian army could deploy anywhere in the world – in 7 hours

In the future, a fleet of heavy transport aircraft will reportedly be capable of moving a strategic unit of 400 Armata tanks, with ammunition, to anywhere in the world. And probably at hypersonic speed, enabling Russia to mount a global military response.

According to a new design specification from the Military-Industrial Commission in Moscow, a transport aircraft, dubbed PAK TA, will fly at supersonic speeds (up to 2,000 km/h) and will boast an impressively high payload of up to 200 tons. It will also have a range of at least 7,000 kilometers.

The PAK TA program envisages 80 new cargo aircraft to be built by 2024. This means in a decade Russia’s Central Command will be able to place a battle-ready armored army anywhere, Expert Online reports, citing a source in the military who attended the closed meeting.

Hypersonic = 5 x the speed of sound or more*, which is very different from mere supersonic.

*Although since these things would be going to a very high altitude, the speed of sound is meaningless.

Anyway, this is just moonshine. A pipe dream. Castles in the air. Call it what you will. It belongs in the realm of 1950s/1960s military fantasy. And utterly unworkable for many reasons, some quite mundane. What if the armoured divisions were located some inconvenient distance from the aircraft bases? They would take days just to bring them all together, along with their crews, supplies and support units. And what sort of air bases would these wonder planes need, both in Russia and wherever they need to go to?

Some of the basic numbers don't even add up. Fully loaded, this new tank will weigh close on 60 tonnes, so one aircraft could hold 3. To transport 400 tanks (two armoured divisions) would require 130 flights, not counting everything and everyone else that makes up such units, which would be vast. 80 aircraft wouldn't cut it, unless they planned on several waves of flights, which would take several days to organise and execute even once everything else was ready. Never mind the fact that traditional armoured units are largely defunct nowadays.

The current doctrine in most armed forces is for boring but reliable subsonic transport aircraft with very good rough-field capability, able to support operations in very harsh environments and less developed regions. There are all sorts of articles and proposals about hypersonic transport, but it's mostly pie in the sky, and a very long way from anything concrete.
