I agree and find it deplorable, the degree to which the US has become a police state. It disgusts me a great deal.
However, I would not consider the UK to be any better. Actually, much worse, given the amount of authoritarian laws and the "we know what's best for you" and the "we need to protect you from yourself" attitudes.
