Red squirrels are BACK: UK natives are fighting 'plague' of greys
Red squirrels are battling back against their grey rivals and have returned to one of Britain’s best loved beauty spots.
Except for a few pockets in the north of England, the Isle of Wight and Scotland, native reds have been almost wiped out, with a 95% decline since 1952.
Their rapid decline has been blamed on the success of the imported grey, which spreads the squirrel pox virus.
But now after a 16 year absence, the reds have been spotted once again in Windermere, in the Lake District.
Bob Cartwright, from the charity Westmorland Red Squirrels, said: “So far this year there have been seven sightings, including just a few weeks ago a red seen bouncing around in Ellerthwaite Square right in the centre of Windermere.
“It is pretty clear that they are here in good numbers.”
Disease, habitat loss and competition for food from non-native grey squirrels have been blamed for the crisis in the population of reds.
But recent UK studies of 300 woodlands have found they are making a fightback, with numbers rising steadily by 7%.
Scientists think they have finally developed an immunity to the killer pox.
The island of Anglesey in North Wales is now a grey squirrel-free zone after a controversial 20-year eradication programme of greys.
More than 700 red squirrels are now thought to live on Anglesey and many have crossed the Menai Strait bridge to settle in Bangor.
In 2013 experts even found a red nicknamed ‘Clark Kent’ - after Superman’s alter ego - who survived after being stricken with the grey’s deadly virus.

My parents, who put food out for the birds and encourage badgers to visit their garden during the 'lean time', treat squirrels as vermin, as they do with foxes and pigeons. Go figure.
