The Objective Definition of Beauty

Post by cronus » Mon Mar 30, 2015 9:19 pm

Some proportions and shapes are more pleasing to the eye than other proportions and shapes. The same for sounds and tastes and so forth. Yet is there some hidden elegant commonality from all these very human concepts which would lead to the objective definition of beauty? Are you in possession of the secret recipe? What is it? A equation? A poem? Can it have meaning yet be poetry? Is it credible to declare beauty in a pretty human form? merely transient flesh and blood? Your call? What is the objective definition of beauty to you?
What will the world be like after its ruler is removed?

Górecki: Symphony number 3, especially the 2nd and 3rd movements. Gives me goosebumps every time I hear it.

Well, if we're going to start that...

Second best music/video package ever put together, in my considered professional opinion, and I'm not even that keen on the band, generally.

Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio, Salome receives the Head of John the Baptist (c.1710)

How is something so gruesome and visceral also so compelling and, yes, beautiful?

Yeah but, does it give you goosebumps? That's the objective test of beauty, imo.

It did indeed.

As did the Caravaggio, when I saw it in the National Gallery.
