Here's a theory being presented. Basically, they are there because our teeth and the region around them shrank but the lower part of the mandible didn't - a consequence of eating cooked food.

It's an idea. But we weren't alone in eating cooked food. The Neanderthals also cooked their food, but had a receding chin.
The biggest difference between modern Homo Sapiens and earlier models is robustness, I think.
We are far less robust than Neanderthals, or Homo Erectus etc.
We have a relatively long delicate neck compared to what went before, so I still think the chin is some sort of protection for the throat area. Not necessarily from predators, but maybe from day-to-day knocks, falling through branches when climbing, or blows when fighting. People tend to tuck they chin down onto their chest, if they are taking a beating, in an instinctive manner, but it does protect the throat.
While there is a market for shit, there will be assholes to supply it.

I like that idea. I use my penis to protect my knees in a similar fashion.
