Governments have a duty to improve the well being of the people.

No, they have the duty to protect the rights and abilities of the people to improve their own well being.

If they do not do this, they should not even exist.

Governments are not your mother, they are regulatory instruments intended to give everyone the opportunity to provide for themselves without being oppressed by others, or by government itself.

Since widespread ownership of handguns leads to widespread murder and mutilation by bullet, it is the duty of any responsible government to remove as many of those as possible.

Now replace the word "handguns" with "automobiles" and see how that works for you.

Every government in the world, except the corrupt USA government does this.

While I agree that the US government is corrupt, it's respect (what remains of it) for the right to keep and bear arms set forth in our Constitution is not among it's corruptions.

On rights.
There is no "right to bear arms", except for that ludicrous and self serving second amendment, which was created, as it clearly states, to permit the early USA government to call on citizens to become militia for defense. Even that purpose is now obsolete.

Our Supreme Court, and the vast majority of Americans disagree with you.

Out of the more than 195 nations that make up planet Earth, only the USA has a statement making gun ownership a right.

Which is what makes the United States alone a nation of fundamental freedoms and respect for individual rights.

The United Nations declaration of human rights clearly has no such statement.

Indeed. And that's what makes the United Nations a despotic and corrupt organization.

Basically, outside the sick imaginations of gun nutter Americans, and the corrupt promulgation of that horrible idea by gun manufacturers, such a "right" does not exist.

Sure it does. And it exists because we claim it, and we're prepared to defend it as our natural, fundamental right against the useful idiots of tyranny.

You are like a smoker living in the first half of the 20th Century, who fervently believes the lying advertisements of the tobacco industry, which claimed smoking was good for you. Except that the tobacco industry is replaced by the gun manufacturers, who use their minions, like the NRA and John Lott, to claim that guns are good, when the smallest intelligence can see that a tool designed for murder cannot be good.

Back to the same old tired hoplophobe rhetoric I see. Evidently you can't reason carefully enough to examine the nuanced arguments I present to you, so you resort to propagandistic bombast instead.

Not really. For the law abiding person, walking down the street with a loaded gun is far less dangerous than walking down the street with an open bottle of beer.

A Detroit woman whose home has been robbed three times prevented a fourth one all by herself.

Three men were inside the woman’s home when she confronted them with a gun on Tuesday and opened fire. She hit one of the men in the shoulder, according to WXYZ.

The wounded man is in police custody while the other two are on the loose.

The woman’s family members said that the she is shaken up and also told WXYZ that this is the fourth time she has been targeted by home invaders.

One neighbor wonders whether the suspects also tried to break into his house on Monday. That man, Chris Ballard, also said what the woman did was just what his neighborhood needs to deal with its crime problem.

“I’m glad she did [shoot],” Chris Ballard told WDIV. “I hope it’s the same guys that got me yesterday.”

Asked what he thought would have to happen for criminals to stop targeting residents, Ballard said “more of this” — a reference to his neighbor’s response to the three intruders.

“More people protecting their house. That’s what’s going to give them the message that they can’t go in there because people work too hard for it.”

You can't collect all the hand guns, and while shotguns are very good for home defense, they are difficult to conceal and carry about in public, they tend to frighten the sheeple.
