Milton Keynes' Midsummer Place oak tree 'drowned', says builder
A protected oak tree in the middle of a multimillion-pound shopping centre "drowned" from poor drainage, a builder of the site has claimed.
Midsummer Place in Milton Keynes opened around the great oak in 2000, but the tree soon began shedding its leaves.
Bernard Nichols said a team wrongly dug out drainage pipes when a new section was built, meaning the oak often sat in up to two feet of water when it rained.
Experts are due to assess the tree for signs of life on Monday.
It is one of just two great oaks in the new town of Milton Keynes, which was built in the 1960s and 1970s.
The shopping centre, now owned by Intu, said a report in 2013 showed the tree was in a "mortality spiral" and "unless there is a miracle, it is dead".
(continued, a twisted scumple metaphor for when geo-engineering goes wrong - the smallest unit of μ-climate change in action....)

Re: Global Climate Change Science News
I tell a story about a surveyor who used to work with his developmentally-challenged son. It was a toss which one had the higher IQ but anyway, the Great BoogetyBoo was tasked to take his survey crew and lay out the sewer system for an upscale "equestrian" subdivision of McMansions with paddocks.
Now, the Great BoogetyBoo was not as strong in geometry as you'd figure a survey crew chief would, or even should be. In fact, he was so dangerous with a calculator that he tried to avoid using the tool altogether, instead relying on right angles and the little bit of accumulated surveying lore he had squirreled away over the years. He did a lot of inefficient "boxing around" things he couldn't cut by "Turning three 90s and a 270", and his crew cut a lot of extra line on hot summer days due to the Great BoogetyBoo not being mathematically competent to, say, use a theodolite to measure an angle and distance conveniently off a line, and solve a right triangle to get back on the line. Surveyors and middle schoolers pull off that sort of thing all the time, but not the Great BoogetyBoo, who "preferred" to stay on the line and cut whatever was in his way. Which brings us back to the story...
So this fine day, the Great BoogetyBoo found his way obstructed by a grand and spectacular 63-inch* live oak with 20" diameter buttress limbs which had elbowed in the ground and taken root and re-ascended...The tree was so massive and striking, in fact, that the developer and engineers of the upscale equestrian subdivision had taken quite a bit of care and effort to design the entire front entrance of the subdivision around the stately old oak.
It took the Lessor BoogetyBoo 2 entire tanks of gas and bar oil, hammers, wedges, and the whole damn afternoon to take down that one damn tree so they could see to stake out that one damn manhole. Seems no one told him about the tree.

Yes, I do. Why is that hypocritical? The US Constitution announces, supports and defends the proposition that fundamental individual rights are not up for public votes.mistermack wrote:Hypocrite. Re: Global Climate Change Science News
That's why I define rights as "Freedoms of action that may be defended against infringement by others." And that's why they are natural and not granted by government and are therefore unalienable. Our Constitution does not grant or issue rights, it acknowledges and protects the rights that exist in each of us by virtue of our existence and humanity.Scumple wrote:Yeah. I don't consider the principles mentioned in the Constitution to be "half true now and a liars spell book" because the principles are timeless examples of what every human being, and indeed every living creature, claims and defends against infringement by others.
It has always been true, and will always be true that the individual has a right to life, liberty and property, among others. And it has always been and will always be true that the individual will assert and defend those rights against intrusions by others.
This is not merely a philosophical position, it is a biological fact of all living creatures.

Even salmon?

Re: Global Climate Change Science News
Yup, even salmon. That they die after reproducing doesn't change the fact that they strive (mightily I might add) to survive and reproduce. The same is true of male Black Widow spiders and Praying Mantis'. Males get eaten after reproducing, but prior to that point in time they do the same things every living organism does to survive.piscator wrote:Even salmon?

More Evidence Of Climate Data Tampering By NOAA?
9:24 PM 03/09/2015
Michael Bastasch
When Dr. Roy Spencer looked up summer temperature data for the U.S. Corn Belt, it showed no warming trend for over a century. But that was before temperatures were “adjusted” by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration climate scientists — now the same data shows a significant warming trend.
Spencer, a climate scientist at the University of Alabama in Huntsville, said that the National Climatic Data Center made large adjustments to past summer temperatures for the U.S. Corn Belt, lowering past temperatures to make them cooler. Adjusting past temperatures downward creates a significant warming trend in the data that didn’t exist before.
“I was updating a U.S. Corn Belt summer temperature and precipitation dataset from the NCDC website, and all of a sudden the no-warming-trend-since-1900 turned into a significant warming trend,” Spencer wrote on his blog, adding that NCDC’s “adjustments” made the warming trend for the region increase from just 0.2 degrees fahrenheit per century to 0.6 degrees per century.
NCDC temperature data downloaded by Spencer in March 2014 looked quite different from data he downloaded this month. That’s because NCDC constantly adjusts its data to correct for errors, but critics have said these adjustments seem to always increase the warming trend for the U.S. or globally.
“Being the co-developer of a climate dataset (UAH satellite temperatures) I understand the need to make adjustments for known errors in the data…when you can quantitatively demonstrate an error exists,” Spencer wrote.
“But a variety of errors in data measurement and collection would typically have both positive and negative signs,” Spencer noted, adding that he corrects for such errors when calculating satellite temperature data even if they tend to cancel each other out.
“In contrast, the thermometer data apparently need to be adjusted in such a way that almost always leads to greater and greater warming trends,” he added.

Spencer is not the first to criticize NCDC’s adjustments to temperature data. Science blogger Steven Goddard (his pen name) has been arguing for years that government climate agencies have been tampering with temperature data to create a significant warming trend where none actually exists.
“NCDC pulls every trick in the book to turn the US cooling trend into warming. The raw data shows cooling since the 1920s,” Goddard told The Daily Caller News Foundation in a previous interview.
Goddard says that NCDC has been cooling past temperatures in the data to make the present look much warmer by comparison, bolstering the case that global warming is being caused by human activity and is rapidly getting worse.
“NCDC does a hockey stick of adjustments to reverse the trend,” Goddard said. “This includes cooling the past for ‘time of observation bias’ infilling missing rural data with urban temperatures, and doing almost nothing to compensate for urban heat island effects.”
Meteorologist Anthony Watts has also caught NOAA changing the temperature record. For two years, NOAA claimed that July 2012 was the hottest month on record — that is, until it quietly adjusted the data so that July 1936 was the hottest month on record.
“Two years ago during the scorching summer of 2012, July 1936 lost its place on the leaderboard and July 2012 became the hottest month on record in the United States,” Watts wrote. “Now, as if by magic, and according to NOAA’s own data, July 1936 is now the hottest month on record again. The past, present, and future all seems to be ‘adjustable’ in NOAA’s world.”
“You can’t get any clearer proof of NOAA adjusting past temperatures,” Watts wrote. “This isn’t just some issue with gridding, or anomalies, or method, it is about NOAA not being able to present historical climate information of the United States accurately.”
But what does NOAA have to say about its temperature adjustments?

The biological fact of survival-related behaviour is an important underpinning to an understanding of all organisms, including humans, but it does not translate directly into "natural rights" in a social species with the ability to communicate and analyse abstract concepts, and to develop intricate social structures.
