I do not have an answer to the ISIS problem, but it is interesting to see how almost all the posters above are using their gonads instead of their brains to think with. Sure, the burning of the Jordanian pilot was an unforgivable atrocity, and it stirs up the emotions. However, a rational thinker can rise above his hormones and his emotions, and think things through instead of simply reacting. Something that is not terribly apparent in this thread, although rEvo did show some sense in his last post, which is nice to see.

As long as the "them" you exterminate are the full-on jihadis, fair enough. But many of the techniques that are advocated also kill a lot of other people, which simply stokes up the anti-western rage of the whole population. Military responses must be (and be seen to be) very surgical, very precise...

It doesn't have to be "civilised" (e.g. negotiation etc). But an attitude of kill everyone who knows a terrorist (knowingly or unknowingly) or is within vicinity of a terrorist or looks like a terrorists or looks at you the wrong way or moves the wrong way, is categorically stupid. It will generate, and has generated, more terrorists than it takes out. Someone with some brains instead of conservative morals needs to take over and do this right. I'm free on Friday at 11am. You need to kill them all. Like Hitchens said it is a tribal thing. Know your enemy and take them seriously. I agree with rEvo. Nor is nuking Mecca going to help. Mecca is part of Saudi Arabia which is an ally against ISIS. Nuking them is not real smart!

I do not know the best way of dealing with ISIS, and I admit it. But I would be really edified to discover from the smarter ones on this forum, an alternative way of dealing with the situation that did not make things worse.
