Golden Dawn have never polled over 10% in any election. The 22% figure was a widely touted opinion poll prior to the 2014 EU elections. They actually polled 9.4% - their highest ever total. This was seen as a protest vote against austerity measures (which, at the time, none of the major parties were opposed to.) The rise of SYRIZA has pretty much dampened that squib.Warren Dew wrote:Within a percentage point of where they were in the 2012 election. If it was EU elections, the Golden Dawn vote wasn't just a vote against austerity - it was a vote against EU membership. Quite true. But, at the time, no credible party was campaigning on either platform - anti-austerity or EU-withdrawal. Now that SYRIZA has adopted one half of that, GD has dropped back to 6%.Warren Dew wrote:If it was EU elections, the Golden Dawn vote wasn't just a vote against austerity - it was a vote against EU membership. SYRIZA has been campaigning against austerity since at least 2012, I believe. I suppose you could argue they weren't credible back then.Xamonas Chegwé wrote:Quite true. I suspect the result is just that while people trust Golden Dawn EU representatives to vote to dissolve the EU, they don't trust Golden Dawn to run the country. There's a similar effect with the UKIP in the UK, if I recall correctly.

Very true. Anti-EU parties always do much better in EU elections. Re: Greek civil war, when not if
It is fun to gloat over the failure of the Golden Dawn, but the future of Greece does not look rosy. Greece is now governed by a party very much on the left end of its political spectrum, but that party cannot govern without the consent of its coalition partners, some of which are labelled centrist but in reality rather right wing. That coalition is bound to fall apart. The ideological differences will overwhelm the common goal of ending the austerity program imposed by the EU and the IMF. Then the colonels will take over. They have a record of doing that, and once they repeat the intervention Golden Dawn will be in the driver's seat regardless of its lack of electoral appeal. There are also strong parallels with the demise of the Weimar Republic.
