Dog map: Find the top pooch in your UK postcode

Post by klr » Sun Jan 18, 2015 3:10 pm

Based on 10 years of micro-chipped dog data, the Beeb has come up with some interesting findings:
More than 509,000 Labradors were tagged in the past decade by pet registration companies Petlog and Animalcare, making it the country's most popular breed.

In second place came the Jack Russell terrier with more than 376,000 animals tagged. The Staffordshire bull terrier was third, with 356,000.

The data, which included five million dogs but excluded the numerous permutations of crossbreeds, also revealed that Liverpool was the most popular postcode for shih tzus, while greyhounds are the dog of choice in Halifax, West Yorkshire.

Greyhounds in West Yorkshire? Balderdash. It's whippets and flat caps, mate.
Yeah well that's just, like, your opinion, man.

That doesn't necessarily follow.
It makes it the most popular breed, among the people who take the trouble to have their dogs tagged.
It might be a different story, with the people who don't give a shit.
While there is a market for shit, there will be assholes to supply it.

From what I see round here the Staffy is most common among the Burberry and white trainers set.

I think that point was made in the article.

As to how likely people are to tag their dogs: It's hard to say. Certainly, some of the breed numbers seem very low, as with (say) the Bichon Frise.

But it's the best place to start, and tagging is going to become mandatory. Seth won't like that. :tea:

Looking at that map, you can virtually pick out the Conservative and Labour areas, by the dogs they tag.
Labour is Staffs, and Tory is Labrador and Border Collie.

Which has got me worried, because Border Collies are the only breed of dog I would have myself.
But that's because we had them on the farm when I was a kid.
And farmers vote Tory. But I ain't no farmer. Although I do have an allotment.
