Completely off topic, but I'm reminded of my first year at UCSD, when I took a class called "Gay and Lesbian Politics". Not that I was particularly interested in gay and lesbian politics, but enrollment in that particular course had the benefit of satisfying not one, but two GE requirements: a political science requirement, and a cultural diversity requirement. Two birds, one stone! But I digress.

So the first day of class comes, teacher walks in, and this cat is just about as stereotypically gay as can be: pink shirt, lavender tie, bleached highlights, and of course the obligatory lisp. He gives his lecture—about what, I cannot recall—and at the end of class he gives us our first assignment which was to read the good ol' The Communist Manifesto.




Anyway, I was just thinking about how that whole scene probably would have given poor Seth a major heart attack.
And this was back in '92. I can only imagine that in 2014 our universities are far gayer and lefter than they were back then...

Wrong. I would have gladly read the Communist Manifesto, not that I would have needed to since I had read both the Communist Manifest and Mao's Little Red Book cover to cover by the time I was a junior in high school. Back then it was the popular belief that even possessing a copy of Mao's Little Red Book was a criminal offense, and my parents took great care to keep it carefully concealed in the library, where of course I found it when I was still in grade school. I didn't become interested in the contents until the late sixties and early seventies, during the Vietnam war and the many protests and demonstrations (and more than a couple of riots) that I experienced.

I probably would have failed the class as a result of implacably challenging the teacher's specious reasoning and misinformation, something I was wont to do from a very young age to anyone who posited illogic and unreason, regardless of how socially appropriate it might have been to do so.

I don't suffer fools and I have no compunctions whatsoever about speaking out when I detect propaganda and indoctrination occurring. I never have and I never will.

And his being gay would have had absolutely nothing whatever to do with my analysis. I grew up around gays in the theater and found them to be perfectly ordinary and enjoyable people with whom I had no conflict at all.
