TV host wears same suit for a year and nobody notices

Australian TV host wears same suit for a year and nobody notices

An Australian TV presenter has said he wore the same blue suit on-screen for 12 months and nobody noticed.

Karl Stefanovic wore the outfit to make a point about the sexism he said his female colleagues faced.

"No-one has noticed," he said. "But women, they wear the wrong colour and they get pulled up. They say the wrong thing and there's thousands of tweets written about them."

Stefanovic is a presenter on Today, the breakfast show on Channel Nine.

The 40-year-old, who has been a presenter and reporter for nearly two decades, has also participated in a variety of celebrity gameshows in Australia, including their versions of Dancing on Ice and Hole in the Wall.

He told The Age newspaper that his co-host, Lisa Wilkinson gets regular messages from viewers and comments in the press about her fashion choices.

"Women are judged much more harshly and keenly for what they do, what they say and what they wear," said Stefanovic.

"I've worn the same suit on air for a year - except for a couple of times because of circumstance - to make a point.

"I'm judged on my interviews, my appalling sense of humour - on how I do my job, basically. Whereas women are quite often judged on what they're wearing or how their hair is."

He started his experiment by wearing the suit two days in a row, without a comment. He then carried on for days and then months when he realised no-one was noticing.

"Only Lisa and [Today team member Sylvia Jeffreys] know about the suit. They often remark that it's getting a bit stinky," said Stefanovic.

"I'm hoping to get it into the dry cleaners at the end of the year."

Yeah, this is a great little stunt. He's generally a dickhead, but I support what he's done here.

Suits all look much the same, whereas women's clothes are much more varied.
Who notices a suit, unless it's a weird one?

Anyway, when a man is speaking, you generally listen to what he's saying, rather than look at clothes.
Whereas, when a woman talks, the mind tends to wander.

I have a friend who puts the phone down when his girlfriend is talking, and just picks it up occasionally, and says, "yeh", or "oh really? " and then puts it down again. She hardly ever notices.

Mostly by other women. Sissies can be really strict, but I suspect other women constitute the bulk of Ms Wilkinson's wardrobe and makeup critics.

Men of course are too busy staring at their eyes to notice what they are wearing. Well, that's what I do. Really.

On a serious note: I've hardly ever heard tennis commentators discuss the outfit of a male player, unless there's something really funky going on.

With women players on the other hand, it's pretty much expected that the outfit of the day will get discussed. The ratings are not always positive either.

Well, I don't personally give a toss what the men wear. Or the women.
EXCEPT,

the fucking stupid habit men have of both wearing the same colours.
So half the time, you can't tell who's hitting the ball without squinting. It's pathetic and they should have a rule for it. Toss a coin, and the winner can pick whatever colour he likes, and the loser has to wear something totally contrasting.

It's obvious why they do it. They look at the court, and if the surrounding advertising is mostly blue, they wear blue. It makes it slightly harder for the opponent to pick out where they are. Micro seconds delay can win you a few points in a match. The rule should be, you can't wear the same colour as the advertising.

It's only Wimbledon that insists on "mostly white" clothing for both men and women. Other tournaments have a more relaxed dress-code, if they have one at all. So blame the individual players if you can't tell them apart elsewhere.

Actually, the mostly white of Wimbledon seems to give little problem. Maybe, the subconscious sees white as a non-colour, so the eye goes to the recogniseable features of the player.

Queens club ( I think ) was one of the worst. The advertising boards were mostly blue, and the players were nearly all wearing blue. Not all of them, so it wasn't encouraged by the sponsors. It was their choice, and it made it hard to pick them out against the background. Which was what they intended, I believe.

It's not just tennis though. Very often, you get two rugby teams with very similar kits.
With thirty players on the pitch, in similar colours, it makes the match look a mess on the box.

In the recent men's tennis at the O2, it was played in a dark hall, and you often had both players in black.

I've seen that at least twice this year, once involving Murray at the French Open. Same shirt, shorts and cap. And his opponent (Fernando Verdasco) is left-handed. But that didn't make it any easier. :banghead:

I saw the same thing at Wimbledon a couple of years ago in a Women's match. Again, left v. right hander, but the it was next to impossible to tell them apart. I've seen women in other tournaments as well wearing basically the same outfit, because they were sponsored by the same sports clothing company.

Very strict they are at Wimbledon. Even the underwear has to be white ... :what:

This is the All-England club we're talking about. Doubtless they have a very oblique Victorian term for checking the colour and stitching of female undergarments.
