One in 10 sausages 'carries risk of hepatitis E virus'

One in 10 sausages and processed pork meat products in England and Wales could cause hepatitis E virus (HEV) infection if undercooked, experts warn.

There has been an "abrupt rise" in the number of cases in England and Wales as people do not realise the risk, scientists advising the government say.

Sausages should be cooked for 20 minutes at 70C to kill the virus, they said.

Although serious cases are rare, HEV can cause liver damage or be fatal.

(continued, never undercook a sausage or accept blowjobs from strangers...take my advice) :nono:

From the story quoted in the OP:
However, he said, the figure of 1 in 10 sausages presenting a potential risk of hepatitis E infection if undercooked should be interpreted with caution.

"This figure was taken from a small survey (63 sausages), and is unlikely to be representative of the UK as a whole.

"Given what is known about the prevalence of high viraemia at the time of slaughter in the UK, a more representative figure would be about 1 in 100, or 1% of sausages, and any risk of infection can be alleviated by ensuring sausages are cooked thoroughly."
Apparently at least one headline editor at the BBC is somewhat of an alarmist.

You would think that it would be fairly easy to eradicate the virus in pigs.
They can eradicate SVD and Foot-n-mouth. What's the problem?
I suspect they just can't be assed to spend the money.
Or maybe the pigs get the virus from birds or rats. That i guess would make it nearly impossible to eradicate.

My theory is it's badgers. Gas the fuckers.

I just had a look on wiki, and it says about hepatitis E :

" Species of this genus infect humans, pigs, boars, deer, rats, rabbits and birds."

So it looks like there's no prospect of eradication. We'll just have to keep cooking pork properly.
That's easy when you cook your own food, but not so certain when you buy food already cooked.

It's a shame that the world couldn't make proper use of food irradiation.
I know it's human nature that it would inevitably be abused for fraud and selling manky shit to the public.

But this is just the sort of thing that irradiation could really be good for. The cost per pack of sausages would be absolutely minuscule. Same with chickens and turkeys. And if the packaging was high quality, it would give it a much better shelf-life.
