It’s a puzzle: How could warmth in the Arctic produce frigid conditions elsewhere?

NOAA scientists may have a clue.

Extremely cold winds have swept down through the Northern Hemisphere recently, reaching as far south as the state of Florida and causing record low temperatures in January. The unusually cold winter of 2009–2010 – which saw massive snowstorms dubbed “Snowpocalypse” and “Snowmageddon” — and the frigid start to 2011 in the eastern United States and Europe have scientists talking about what might be influencing the weather.

Dr. James Overland, a scientist at NOAA’s Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory (PMEL) in Seattle, has been studying the changing conditions in the Arctic for 30 years. He explains why the deterioration of the Polar Vortex could be leading to some of these extreme winter weather events.

As I said, the whole article is conjecture. The "expert" involved did not make any definitive statements about anything. He said essentially, "it's interesting."

In other words he said what an actual scientist says when there is no credible data upon which to draw a rational conclusion.

I don't think a doctorate in physics would get you very far in climate forecasting.
In fact, all the climate science doctors and professors in the world, working together, haven't made much progress as yet.
They are very good at forecasting climate that has already happened though. I will give them that.

That really doesn't mean very much. Most people accept that there has been a small amount of global warming over the last 120 years. So records will be broken in some places.
That's pretty inevitable. But it's EXACTLY what would happen, if the warming was just natural climate variation.
And the climate DOES vary naturally. So take it, Australia. It's the price you pay for living in the oven.
