Here in the UK, a low turnout always favours the Conservatives.
To give them their credit, the Tories would go out and vote Tory if their candidate was a tin of tuna.
The Labour voters on the whole are much more inclined not to bother. They would rather sit at home gobbling pizza and watching soaps. Half of them probably don't even know there IS an election.

I suspect the same applies in the US. Probably more so.

That variable, at least, is removed by compulsory voting...

(and yes, Seth, I know that it's a big no-no for libertarians. Interestingly, in Oz, at least some people who advocated removing the compulsion were from the left...)

Aside from low turnout, this pendulum effect happens every 6th year for two term presidents.

We had the most expensive election ever in Alaska. The media outlets are still counting their windfall. I think they're starting to like this post-Citizens United landscape where Big Money owns all sides in any election.

I have to vote in our state elections soon. Both candidates are fairly pathetic. The labour party has most of the policies I like, but they are going to rip up the contracts for a new major freeway & tunnel I think is needed.

Decisions, decisions...

Free it certainly wasn't.
Fair I suppose it was. If you think that it's fair that the rich can buy their way into power.
But I suppose if the voters are stupid enough to fall for it, they get what they deserve.
