A future of power outages; what happens when the lights go out? baby boom?

It is impossible to imagine the modern world without electricity. We are dependent on an uninterrupted source of power and when it fails the consequences are devastating. Over the past decade there have been 50 significant power-outage events occurring in 26 countries, and the demand for electricity continues to grow stronger with rapid population growth, compact urban areas and an ‘addiction’ to electric appliances.

We'd be pretty fucked with widespread outages of more than a few days.

They ought to have a webpage publishing the current percentage being used of capacity.
And projected usage.
So if people want to be public spirited, they can time their heavy usage to the lowest load periods.
While there is a market for shit, there will be assholes to supply it.

If they introduced REALLY smart meters, they could vary the price depending on demand.
The meter could display the current price.
It might encourage people to turn off unnecessary appliances till the price drops.
People would soon get to know the cheapest times to switch on.

Micro-management is amazingly fickle, complex and costs a lot. So does a new a power station, cost aside it makes sense to increase capacity when demand goes up whilst introducing some smart technology along the way. To have a buffer capacity is no sin. The Earth ain't gonna die cos we used all the electricity.
