Online or offline there are a lot of folks want it to either stay the same or change 180" to your proposed direction. And will violently oppose you. That is before we come to the nut jobs. Figureheads don't change things, they get themselves put on crosses. It is the grassroots and many very small unnoticed incremental steps that changes things. Revolutions may need their figureheads but not all folks need to be one, want to be one and if they've any sense most will turn down the offer immediately.

OK, if your comment was truly only about your personal experience, then I misunderstood it. But as your comment didn't specify that explicitly, and came directly below my comment, that was talking about other people too, I'd say you kind of led me on to it.
