Ebola is now running wild in America

The latest on the American Ebola outbreak : Mr Duncan, the Liberian man who carried it to the US, has died.
So you can forget the theory that all you need is Western medicine to get you through it, if you catch it.
You can bet that they tried their best to save him, having sent him home earlier. And he was a youngish fit looking guy.

The theory now, is that the Spanish Nurse may have touched her face, when taking off her protective gear. Which is understandable. If you get an itch, wearing a crash helmet, it can be unbearable. You just have to scratch it. That's the kind of human element that it's hard to plan for.

I remember griping on here a few weeks ago about an Ebola patient being brought back to the UK, and getting accused of being a scaremongerer, that our Western quarantine was perfect, and there was no risk to anyone, and that I was an idiot for "overreacting".

I would just like the record to show that I, once again, was right.

Nah, you're rarely right, and this is no different. So far quarantine has worked as it should.

A Spanish nurse, who was nursing a priest in a Spanish hospital, has caught ebola.
If you were thinking that western medical practices prevented it, forget it.
Spain has a modern health service, and this patient was as high-profile as it gets, because he was known to have ebola. So ebola jumped from person to person in spite of rigorous medical practice.

It's a mystery. How the fuck did the nurse manage that?
Was it because he was a priest, and religion got the better of the nurse's better judgement?
Or is Ebola REALLY that infectious?

If it is, I think the human race is in the shit.

I'd like to know where you got that information from. What I've heard is that the one experimental drug that seemed to work well has run out and is very difficult to make, so there is no option of treating anybody early with that. The other experimental drug has major issues with patient reaction to it, and the rest of the treatment is just alleviating the symptoms as they arise.
I don't think they are treating symptoms that haven't yet appeared. So I don't know what early treatment you mean.
Not that I'm any kind of expert on the subject. You don't get a definitive description of the treatment strategies from news bulletins.

I think the crux was that if you are an otherwise healthy individual and you get standard hospital care quickly your chances of survival are over 70% in Africa and presumably higher in the west. Without early care and/or consulting witch doctors, your survival drops to below 30%. This was all widely reported early on in the outbreak by the experts in the field. But some people just prefer hyperbole.
