Odds on for Alex Salmond to stick around.

Post by mistermack » Fri Sep 19, 2014 4:31 pm

Alex Salmond is likely to be leader of the Scot Nats for years to come.

Why? Because he's announced he's standing down. I'll believe it when I see it. In writing. Someone else's writing. Or has defeat so addled his brain that he's become a compulsive truther?
I suppose anything's possible. But if he has, it's just as well he's going. He'd be no use to the Scot Nats in that state.

He just suffered a defeat, he's regrouping, he's not retiring from political life.

He's just ensured that Scotland won't be a separate country in his lifetime.
He's achieved the exact opposite of what he wanted.
Doing absolutely nothing would have been infinitely better for the aims of his party.

He hasn't just failed. It's much worse than that. He's killed the baby he was trying to rear.

He obtained promises of greater power devolution for Scotland and the other 3 Nations of GB, not as bad as that if the promises get fulfilled, and he's staying to egg westminster on to make sure they will fulfill those promises.

Most of that was already promised for Scotland. All that they added was a timescale.
And nobody promised anything about the other countries.

And what people should remember is that this referendum was a simple yes or no. Not yes if, or no if.
Do you want Scotland to be an independent country? Yes or no. Not in any way conditional on promises made in the campaign.

If Salmond had won, do you think he would have called another referendum, if he didn't deliver on all of his lying promises? Not a chance. Independence was not conditional on promises that he made, nor on any that Cameron, Brown and Clegg cobbled together.

The decision is made, and that's it.
Any subsequent devolution is not connected to that in any way.

Bottle of whisky tonight and that farmers rifle looking interesting in the corner.
What will the world be like after its ruler is removed?
