These Could Be Some Inconvenient Crime Statistics for Gun Control Advocates

Chicago’s crime rate has dropped since Illinois became the 50th state in the nation to adopt a concealed carry law last year, the Washington Times reported.

Robberies are down 20 percent this year, according to Chicago Police Department statistics. Burglaries are also down 20 percent, while motor vehicle thefts are down 26 percent.
Chicago Police Department Superintendent Garry McCarthy attributed the decrease to “intelligent policing strategies” and said cops confiscated more than 1,300 illegal guns in the first quarter of the year.
But Richard Pearson, executive director of the Illinois State Rifle Association, said it’s clear to him what’s driving the decrease — and it’s not the police. He said the department “hasn’t changed a single tactic.”
“It isn’t any coincidence crime rates started to go down when concealed carry was permitted. Just the idea that the criminals don’t know who’s armed and who isn’t has a deterrence effect,” Pearson told the Times.
By July 29, Illinois had 83,183 applications for concealed carry and had issued 68,549 licenses, the Times reported. Pearson predicted that 100,000 Illinois citizens will have concealed carry permits by the end of 2014.
Individual permits cost about $600 with 16 hours of classes required. Despite the hurdles, Pearson expects that about 300,000 state residents will ultimately have permits before the increase levels off.
Cook County, which includes Chicago, has the state’s largest number of concealed carry applications, with 28,552 requests, but per capita population, fewer than 1 percent in the county have permits.
The Crime Prevention Research Center found in a July study that 11.1 million Americans have permits to carry concealed weapons, a 147 percent increase from 4.5 million seven years ago. The center estimated that after concealed carry laws were passed, homicide and other violent crime decreased by 22 percent.
Florida has the most concealed carry permits, at nearly 1.3 million, according to the Times. Texas is second, with more than 708,000. Hawaii has the least, at just 183.
If Pearson’s projection of 300,000 concealed carry permits proves correct, Illinois would be comparable to Virginia, which has 363,274 permits, and Alabama, which has 379,917 permits.

Lancashire Police start five-week knife amnesty 25 August 2014
Police have launched a knife amnesty after new figures showed there were almost 4,000 blade-related offences in Lancashire over four years.
The five-week scheme will see amnesty bins placed at 10 police stations across the county.
Lancashire Constabulary said there were 3,712 offences involving knives between April 2010 and March 2014.
Assistant Chief Constable Mark Bates said: "Carrying a knife in public will not be tolerated."
Of the recorded offences, 321 were for woundings, 612 were possession of knives, and 459 were knife-related public order offences.
'No massive problem'
However, police say knife crime is falling in Lancashire, with 845 offences recorded in 2013, compared to 1,004 in 2011.
"We do not have a massive problem with knife crime, but a knife is a lethal weapon and even one on Lancashire's streets is one too many," Assistant Chief Constable Bates said.

That sad delusion that 'criminals' are somehow a different species to 'law abiding citizens'. I have no fear of criminals as they tend to be in jail, its ones that havent broken the law but will do are the ones that concern meRaise your hands those of you who believe the criminals are going to turn in their knives (and their pencils and thumb tacks)?
When only criminals carry guns the police know exactly who to shoot!
Re: And this is WHY we carry them...
And who exactly are those people? You don't know, do you? You cannot know, and you know you cannot know, so you argue for everyone other than you to be treated like a criminal. This is classic narcissism and paranoia. See somebody, really.MrJonno wrote:That sad delusion that 'criminals' are somehow a different species to 'law abiding citizens'. You see, you don't have the right to control other people in order to control you own vacuous and imaginary fears, you just have to live with the risk that the guy next to you on the bus has a bomb strapped to his chest and there's not a damned thing you can do about it.
Sleep tight. Sweet dreams.

Well actually I do, its called democracyYou see, you don't have the right to control other people in order to control you own vacuous and imaginary fears
Want to be in charge of your own life , want to have your own personal morality and rights and live by them, want to be in charge of your personal 'defence' then don't live in a country and society.
You are either support the collective and you are decent person or you are against it then you are an evil and a threat to everyone

Most the people handing in knives are criminals (possessing an offensive weapon), if they weren't criminals they wouldn't have the knives in the first place.
There are probably a few legal knives as well but thats no biggie , when only criminals have weapons you know exactly who the criminals are

Think I'll get me one o dem Southern Security Systems then:
How to Install a Southern Security System
1. Go to a secondhand store and buy a pair of men's used size 14-16 work boots.
2. Place them on your front porch, along with a copy of Guns & Ammo Magazine.
3. Put four giant dog dishes next to the boots and magazines.
4. Leave a note on your door that reads:
Bubba,
Bertha, Duke, Slim, & I went for more ammo and beer. Be back in an hour.
Don't mess with the pit bulls; they attacked the mailman this morning and messed him up bad. I don't think Killer took part, but it was hard to tell from all the blood. Anyway, I locked all four of 'em in the house.
Better wait outside. Be right back.

But those letters are not silent.

Re: And this is WHY we carry them...
Um, no, but people are criminally assaulted in the US and use their legal firearms to defend against such attacks between 80,000 and 2.5 million times a year, depending on who you believe, whereas nobody in the UK can defend themselves with effective weapons of self defense against even the simplest assault, much less two determined terrorists intent on sawing your head off.Fallible wrote:Yeah, people get their heads sawn off all the time here. I'm quite sure that neither that squaddie nor any of the sheeple standing around filming the event had the slightest notion that such a thing could happen to them, around them, or in their (unarmed) country.
They were wrong.
So are you.
If YOU are the one getting your head sawn off, do you think you might be hoping that someone like me just happens to be around to put a stop to it, or are you going to stand on your loony principles and graciously accept having your head sawn off because the principle of an unarmed citizenry is more important to you than your life?
Now it's possible that you might actually be an ethical pacifist and would do so. There are examples of people who do loony stuff like burning themselves to death in protest of war, but somehow I doubt this applies to your shallow ideology. So let's turn the screw a bit and hypothesize that it's not you, but your fifteen year old daughter or son that is being hacked at, and perhaps raped as well. Or your wife. Or your best friend.
How far do your pacifist principles extend now? Will you stand by and loudly proclaim, "This rape and murder, as horrific as it is, must be endured for the sake of the nation in order to justify the government's decision to disarm all of us in order to make society safer!"
You got the sand to live by your principles or are you just another gross hypocrite?
My guess is that you will be screaming and praying for someone like me with a gun to come along and put a stop to it, which coulda been you if you had the balls to stand up to your idiotic government and insist that they respect your rights.
I fucking guarantee it in fact.
