Those were--all hail the almighty saviors--police.
What has that got to do with legal possession by law abiding citizens?
It's got to do with an absurd gun culture in all sections of US society.
Exactly. Many US citizens don't see the absurdity of needing to carry a firearm for protection much the same way as abattoir workers cease to notice the stench around them after a while of working there.
More people encounter violence than they do the stench of decomposition.
It is hardly absurd when people do encounter situations where they do need to protect themselves.
You are a cultural bigot.
You have things as you wish them to be in Australia. You pontificate sanctimony about something that doesn't involve you. The "gun culture" in the US doesn't involve you.

Totally missing the point.

If you mean to say that Australia is not suffering from the gun culture that afflicts the USA, you got that one exactly right.

Actually, from what I hear Australia has a large "gun culture" that is being actively supressed and denied it's rights by the fuckwits in government.

Detroit: Armed & Determined
Detroit once again ranks high on the FBI’s list of most dangerous cities. But it’s a stat Motor City citizens are committed to changing. More and more residents are arming themselves and, with a police chief standing firmly behind them, it’s making a difference.
Wait for the police, they will protect you.
Don't upset the criminal, just give them what they want and they will go away.
There is no such thing as gun danger if you don't carry a gun. A gun won't protect you, it makes you part of the---horror---gun culture. Don't do that.
The world is watching.

Maybe Team America needs to go in there and give them Ozzys their rights back? I always liked Crazy Train, and even the old Black Sabbath stuff too!

How about a word or two so we know what point you are trying to make?

Nonsense. Australia has a large number of sporting shooters, who can pursue their hunting and target practice very effectively within the law. (I was one myself) What we don't have is vast numbers of semi-automatic weapons, or people carrying hand guns. Career criminals will be able to get weapons, sure, but not easily or cheaply, and they are rarely used other than as a threat or to murder other criminals.
That's the way we like it...

For the third or fourth time now: I'm using "gun culture" to mean the absurdity of feeling the need to carry a firearm for protection. We don't have it.

However, in the case of the US, I rather fear that once the number of guns in circulation reaches a certain level, the need to carry a firearm for protection becomes almost a self-fulfilling prophecy...

Are Australian police armed?
They are. So are our soldiers. Then there are those people that buzz around in little, armoured trucks to refill the ATMs. Many farmers have rifles. So have hunters and target shooters. Though the gun buyback scheme resulted in about 600,000 firearms being taken out of circulation, about 330,000 remain legally, privately owned. The guns that were removed are of particular types, chiefly being of the automatic, semi-automatic and pump action varieties.
So we don't have a blanket ban on firearms at all. We do have a ban on particular types of firearms. Also, owners only get a license when they can demonstrate a genuine reason. "I feel safer when I walk around with a gun" isn't one of them. Luckily, hardly anyone in Australia feels a need to walk around with a gun for safety. That is
our "gun culture".

Agreed. I'd call the situation a vicious circle rather than self-fulfilling prophecy, though.
