 Yeah, that was pretty weak. I could've done better than that. Korea should keep in mind that that draw was a fluke.

That was a bit shit, troof. Just goes to show that it is the whole game that counts, not just the score.

Commentary is that Mexico goal block might have been the best in World Cup History.

I think coming on top of the rest of his play on the 17th it might have been the best game by a goal keep we'll see in this world cup.

I mean - really - to hold Brazil scoreless was incredible.

The best defense is a very good defense. :prof:

Tim Cahill has just scored the goal of the tournament (so far) for Australia, to equalise against the Netherlands. 1-1 approaching half time.

... and now gets booked for the second game running, so he misses the final group game against Spain.

Australia still won't make it past the first round, but the team did perform a lot better in this game than I, and the Dutch team, expected, particularly in the first half. To begin with, there was no difference in terms of possession. You don't score goals without it. The Netherlands just managed to capitalise on it better by one. We lost, but we were by no means a walkover for the opponent. I am pleased with the performance despite the result. Of course I would, having expected something like a 6 - 1 score line at best and a sub 40% possession rate.

And Spain are behind to Chile - they could be going out!

Chile are beating Spain 2-0 and they have had only 39% possession. Sometimes possession doesn't reflect the way the game is going.

It's common for weaker teams to allow the better team to come on, defending only the last third. If you expect to be on the back foot for most of the game you get too tired trying to defend higher up the pitch.

Did I say you said it always does? 37% overall for Chile, Spain going home.

Did I say you said I said...

Spain was trounced by the Dutch 5 -1 despite 57% possession and lost to Chile 0 - 2 despite 58% possession. Spain was also ranked #1 before the start of the tournament. I don't know if a defending champions has ever been bundled out so swiftly and comprehensively. Their next and last game is a dead rubber. Odds and statistics are about probability. Of course individual results will not necessarily stick to the average. Duh. Spain is an extreme example of just that.

French commentator said the team had too many players who were just too old and were selected once too many.

You are correct. The defending champions have gone out in the group stages 5 times (as well as Spain, Brazil, France and Italy (twice) have had that dubious honour). But, as far as I know, this is the first time that a defending champion has been knocked out in only two games and certainly the first time that the champions have been the first team to exit.
