Ah-ha...off to google...
"A philosopher is a blind man in a dark room looking for a black cat that isn't there. A theologian is the man who finds it." ~ H. L. Mencken

"We ain't a sharp species. We kill each other over arguments about what happens when you die, then fail to see the fucking irony in that."

Shine is about the Australian son of a Polish migrant, who became a pianist. His extremely ambitious control freak of a father almost managed to put the kibosh on his career. Dad's cruel and brutal behaviour eventually resulted in mental disorders that landed David Helfgott in asylums for a couple of stints. He ceased giving performances and finished up by happenstance tinkling on a piano in a bar / restaurant on a regular basis. Eventually he was rediscovered, but some of the damage caused by his breakdowns remained.

Shine has everything I like in films. It's about relatively ordinary people. There are no sensational action scenes, just personal interactions depicted in fascinating, gripping fashion. The acting is superb, especially that of Geoffrey Rush, who plays the role of Helfgott as an adult. The editing is tight and devoid of the saccharine that some big-budget directors like Spielberg insist on slathering over their products. The relatively low budget of this film has in no way prevented the story-telling from looking authentic, believable and thoroughly engaging. Cinéma vérité at its best.

A couple of criticisms have been made in regard to the film’s accuracy. One is that Helfgott is actually quite a shitty pianist. I think I prefer the judgement by musicians of the calibre like Isaac Stern and Daniel Barenboim over the that of hacks whose authority on matters musical rests on being paid for writing opinions to fill column-inches in the arts section newspapers.

Another objection was raised by one of Helfgott’s sisters. She claimed that father was nothing like the tyrannous bastard the film portrayed him as. John Macgregor, who was part of the research team for the film, asked in an open letter published in The Australian if anyone would agree with her claim. Nobody, including all three of her siblings supported her.

I rate this one as five out of five. Your mileage may vary, of course, and it probably will if your preferences are James Bond cartoons or Killer Zombie Tomatoes from Outer Space.
I am, somehow, less interested in the weight and convolutions of Einstein’s brain than in the near certainty that people of equal talent have lived and died in cotton fields and sweatshops. - Stephen J. Gould

Funny People, with Adam Sandler and Seth Rogan. Not your typical Sandler comedy. More in the vein of that other Sandler comedy/drama. Can't think of the title. You know. That good one. That one.
People think "queue" is just "q" followed by 4 silent letters.

But those letters are not silent.

They're just waiting their turn.

Just saw the new X-Men. It gave me a tremendous nerdgasm. There were a couple mutants I didn't recognize and didn't really give a shit about. And I wished Nightcrawler was back in the mix because he was always my favorite. But other than minor quibbles, I have to say it was pretty goddamned awesome.

You must be talking about Punch Drunk Love - that is the only one I know where he puts in a great performance - in fact, pretty much the only one where he is bearable! :tea:

That's the one. And if you liked Punch Drunk Love, check out Funny People. And make sure to watch the unrated version if you wanna see titays :smoke:

TASM 2 and Grand Budapest Hotel. Liked them both.

The thing about TASM 2 is that I think it's the first superhero movie where the main plot is romantic. Peter/Gwen relationship takes precedence over any of the villains. Maybe that's why it's getting such backlash from no-life nerds on forums and such. Maybe it really did suck though. It was a solid 6/10 for me.
